Bottom of Table Teams Clash For Vital Points - Kilcullen travelled the short journey to take on Naas in their hometown on Friday, October 20, in the Division 3 bowling league fourth round game.

Both teams in the previous rounds were completely below the standard expected and now find they are lying right at the bottom of the league table. Kilcullen going into this game with only three points to the good while Naas being pointless so far makes this game all the more important to both teams.

Admittedly both teams have been short a couple of regulars to date, especially Kilcullen with the recent passing of their stalwart Billy Murphy (RIP). We extend our condolences to his wife Mary, family and friends.

Tight Encounter - On Mat 1 it was a very close and tight encounter throughout, with the home team holding a slight advantage up to the 13th end.

It was on the next end that the visitors took the lead for the first time in the game albeit by the tender margin of one score.

It was short lived however as Naas took back command and scored three on the last end to close out the game. Final score: Naas 15, Kilcullen 13.

Naas: Mona Garrett, Pat Maher, Andy Kelly and Helen Gaffney.

Kilcullen: Dina Dillon, Sue Goulding, Mary Murphy and Mary Sherry.

Late Blitz - Mat 2 from the start and up to the half way stage was a very low scoring and exciting match due to the closeness of the scores.

From that point onwards it was the home side that took over and opened up a gap of six on a score of 10/4. With only three ends left it looked a foregone conclusion for Naas to canter to an easy victory.

But the introduction of sub Christy Sweeney a couple of ends previously that made all the difference in those last three ends, as Kilcullen came with a late blitz, holding the home side scoreless and registering ten scores in that dramatic finish to win on a scoreline of 14/10.

Naas: Ann Lally, Margaret Murphy, Seanie Coyle and Eddie Cahill.

Kilcullen: Betty Barker, Mary Phelan, Gabrielle Sweeney, Liam Sherry and sub Christy Sweeney.

Kilcullen take away three points and Naas take two points.

Overall best for Naas was Helen Gaffney and Seanie Coyle, while best for Kilcullen was Christy Sweeney when introduced and Mary Murphy who gave a superb performance from start to finish.

The result does not change the position of either side in the table. Naas will be the most disappointed as they feel they should have taken all five points on offer.

No doubt there will be many twists and turns before this campaign is finished, but both teams will need to improve considerably if they want to reach the heights of last season where they were very close to promotion. There is a lot of catching up to do if they want to challenge the leaders.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Our under-10s travelled to Conary to take on St. Patricks of Avoca and in an end to end game the difference was the home side took their chances while our team, who did enjoy some good moments, were wasteful in front of goal and didn’t defend well enough.

Frank Lang and Aidan Heffernan scored for Newtown. Among those who starred were Ryan Collins, Pat Carey and Aaron Roy.

Our under-11s were involved in the WDSL U11 Blitz in East Glendalough at Sunday lunchtime. The team played five games where they won two, drew one and lost two games.

All in all they enjoyed all the games and every player on the day played their part in the blitz.

The following are the fixtures for the weekending Sat.28th/Sun.29th Oct. 2017:

Under-8s at home to Wicklow Rovers Green ko to be confirmed.

Under-11s away to Ashford Rovers Blue ko to be confirmed.

Our first Last Man Standing competition got under way last weekend (28th-30th October) and we had 90 Players kicking it all off.

Its €450 for the winner of the competition and you can keep up to date with the LMS on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Many thanks to everyone who supported this fundraiser and it is very much appreciated.

The WDSL in conjunction with all the clubs in the league are running a fundraiser, ‘The Kube’, on Saturday, November 18, in the Parkview Hotel in Newtown.

It is hoped every club will enter at least one participant to take on the Kube. The entry fee is €300 per participant, which each club must pay themselves or can, get sponsored. Sponsored cards are available at present through any committee member. As yet the club haven’t decided who will take on the Kube on behalf of the club but we have a couple of interested parties.

Anything over €300 raised on the sponsor cards goes to the club and our participant/s stands to win up to €1,500 for the club depending on how she or he does.

We had intended to have one player but we can officially announce that two coaches from the club Stephen Nolan and John Dunleavy will be representing the club on the night (no pressure lads).

The lads have been very active in collecting sponsorship in the past month so please support the lads as they raise some much-needed funds for the club. Both lads have to select a song as their entrance music and as both are fully paid up members of the boy band club they will probably need a dig out when it comes to selecting that tune that will get the adrenalin flowing on the night and inspire the lads to glory.

We have only one player from the club celebrating a birthday in the coming week and he is Romain Beauge from the Development Squad. Happy birthday Romain from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors F.C. please contact the Secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior men made it four wins on the bounce when they recorded an excellent 4-2 away win over Garda FC, it is now five wins in the last six games with four of those wins been away from home.

Maurice Dunne gave Rovers a dream start when he fired them in front after five minutes. Another goal from Maurice Dunne and further goals from Gareth Murphy and Luke Byrne ensured the lads got three valuable points as they climb the table after this fantastic win. The lads are in a bit of a purple patch at present and will be hoping the games come thick and fast.

This was another all round impressive performance from the team, which sees them well in the promotion mix in their league.

Our under-17 DDSL team lost 2-1 to league champions Palmerstown at Whitegates. Stephen Finlay gave Rovers the lead with his 17th goal of the season but it was short lived as the away side levelled soon after to send the sides in all square at the break.

There was nothing to separate the two sides in the second period as they both went in search of a winner, the eventual winner came to the champions from the penalty spot to run out 2-1 victors.

The lads were more than a match for the league champions and definitely deserved something from the game.

Saturday’s junior action saw our two remaining sides in SFAI cup action make their exit. The 12As went out in controversial circumstances, leading 1-0 in the dying seconds against Edenderry Town the referee seemed to play excessive injury time in which the home side levelled matters. Things got worse when late in the second period of extra time the home side were awarded a disputed penalty, which proved to be the winner.

The lads were outstanding on the day and deserved to be in the hat for the next round but they did themselves and the club proud.

Another team to do themselves and the club proud were the under-16s who made the journey to Kildare and were unlucky to lose 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller to Allenwood Celtic. Nathan Sullivan helped himself to a brace with Paul Marah nabbing a single in what was a good all round team performance.

In local action, the under-14As maintained their one hundred percent record when they beat Coolboy Rgrs 6-2 away from home. Jordan Younger blasted in a fantastic hat-trick, Callum Gibney netted twice with Sean O’Meara completing the scoring in what was an impressive team effort from the lads.

The only game to take place in the junior section on Sunday was the 15As home match against Coolboy in which the lads recorded a comfortable 7-0 win.

Noah Sheridan nicked a splendid hat-trick to take his tally to four for the season, Fionn Luddy scored his first goals of the season when he fired home a brace.

Top scorer Josh Odlum moved on to eight in the scoring stats when he scored one with Stephen Kearns completing the scoring with his third of the campaign.

This result means the lads have maximum points from their five shield games to date.

Our Last Man Standing competition has now progressed to week four, at the time of going to print we definitely had 56 players safely through to round 4 with one player each on Burnley and Newcastle in the Monday night game hoping to join them.

Five players made their exit after their selection Watford surprisingly went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke.

One player went out when their pick West Ham drew with Crystal Palace. Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Swansea booked 38 players a safe passage through, 13 players went through after Liverpool saw off Huddersfield 3-0. Chelsea [3], Man City [1] and Man Utd [1] were the remaining selections to see 5 players progress as they defeated Bournemouth, West Brom and Tottenham respectively. A big thank you to all players who supported our competition and the best of luck to our remaining players.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne.

The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at the Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of three years to eight years. The academy starts at 11am and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits.

Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

AVONMORE FC

Well done to our under-12/13 squad who went through to the next round of the SFAI cup yesterday, beating Moone FC at home in Ballygannon.

There was nothing to separate these two teams in the first half with both sets of players putting in some excellent displays of football.

Avonmore made some changes in the second half, and we soon found ourselves on the scoreboard again. With our confidence high we continued to push forward and put two more past the Moone goalkeeper. Final result: Avonmore FC 4, Moone FC 1. Great win lads, best of luck in the next round.

Avonmore under-16 v Rathnew under-16 - Our under-16s travelled to Rathnew today to try and keep their good going.

This was going to be a game decided by the wind,we played with the wind in the first half and hoped to build up a lead to bring into the second half.

It took us a while to get control of the game and just when we taught we had Rathnew hit us in the break and went 1-0 up after 14 minutes. We tried hard to get shots on goal but Rathnew were defending very well.

With 10 minutes to go in the half we got a throw in and Drew Murray found Cody Reid with a good ball he crossed and Alex Olohan meet it with his head to lop it over the keeper to make it 1-1.

Straight from their tip off we ran direct for goal and when Cody went to pass the ball hit one of the defenders on the arm and the ref gave us a penalty Kelan Busher stepped up and buried it to the back of the net, 2-1 up after 31 minutes.

And in the 33rd minute we made it 3-1 from another Kelan penalty after good play from Tomas Hernandez who was then taken down in the box.

In the 39th minute, Cody received the ball and played in Alex and after very good feet Work he made it 4-1. We went in happy enough with a 4-1 Lead as they were also down to 10 men.

We made a few changes at half-time, we knew Rathnew would come at us strong. We hoped we would be able to keep from scoring in the first 10 to 15 minutes and maybe we’d hit them in the break and score.

In the 52nd minute, Cormac McGraynor won the ball in his own back line and ran by three or four players and managed to get a shot in but it was blocked and from the rebound he was fouled and the ref blew for another penalty.

But we never got to take it as he abandoned the game. It finished 4-1 to us but we’ll have to wait for the outcome of the leagues decision.

Well done to all another decent performance today. Thanks for all the support it’s always nice for the players to get cheered on from the line. Training Thursday 7-8pm.
