Bitten by dogs in schoolyard

November 1995

-

TWO Wicklow town primary schools have appealed to dog owners to keep their pets under control after two local children were bitten in a school yard.

The youngsters, both fifth class pupils at Holy Rosary NS, had to be taken to hospital after they were bitten in separate incidents involving two different dogs while they played at lunch time on Wednesday of last week. One of the girls was bitten on the face and the other on the hand. Now staff at the school and the nearby St Patrick’s NS are pleading with dog owners not to let their animals follow children to class or not to allow them roam freely where they could easily wander onto school grounds. ‘Parents think their children are safe when they come to school, but if other parents are carless about their animals, it is impossible to ensure their safety,’ said one staff member. Wandering dogs presents an ongoing problem for both schools.
