Arrest gave man ‘fright of his life’

-

A WICKLOW man found in possession of €120 worth of cannabis when searched by gardaí has been given the opportunity to avoid a conviction if he can provide a clean urine sample.

Oisin Neary of 120 Heatherville, Greystones, Co Wicklow, was charged with unlawful possession of drugs at Blackstoops, Enniscorthy, on April 15 last.

Last Wednesday’s sitting of Gorey District Court heard that when stopped at a checkpoint, the defendant appeared nervous, leading gardaí to carry out a search at which point they discov- ered the drugs.

Solicitor Ian Bracken told Gorey District Court that Neary had never come to garda attention before and that the incident has given him ‘ the fright of his life’ leading to him quitting cannabis and even drinking.

Mr Bracken said that his client apologised and harboured dreams of travelling some day.

Judge Gerard Haughton said that he would be willing to apply the Probation Act if Neary could provide a clean urine sample and adjourned the case until December 13 to allow this happen.
