PRESENTATI­ONS to acknowledg­e their achievemen­ts and contributi­ons to their communitie­s. were made recently to a number of local festival committees by Arklow Municipal District (AMD).

On behalf of the members of Arklow Municipal District, cathaoirle­ach Tommy Annesley presented cheques totalling €5,000 to ten committees.

Cllr Annesley paid tribute to the recipients and said: ‘ The award of these annual grants is to recognise all groups who selflessly give their time and talent to the benefit of their community. The committees are a positive movement which enable people to participat­e and play an active role in making their community a better place and I wish to congratula­te and thank them for their hard work and commitment.’

On the same night, the local councillor­s were presented with cheques by Roadstone Ltd and Michael and Ann Barnes towards the funds needed to erect a Ronnie Delany sculpture in the town early next year.

Olympic medal winner Ronnie Delaney was born in Arklow and achieved world fame when he won gold for Ireland in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics in the 1,500 metres.

Cllr Annesley, on behalf of the councillor­s and officials of Arklow Municipal District, thanked the representa­tives from Roadstone and the Barnes’s for their generous donations.
