Six of the best for Arklow in the Wexford Box Cup
THE inaugural Wexford Box Cup was held over three days last weekend in St Joseph’s hall in Wexford.
Three hundred boxers from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales took part in one of the hardest championships for both Boys and Girls held in Ireland.
The first Arklow winner was Sean Tyndall . Sean attacked from start to win a unanimous decision against Dean Smithers from Swords.
Amber Byrne was Arklow’s second champion. In the semi-final Amber confirmed superiority over Ann Williamson. Amber’s long-range punching proved too much for the Curragh girl.
In the final Amber beat Leanne Cawley from Mullinahone. Again Amber’s long-range punches proved too much for the Tipperary champion.
Daniel Fox was in great form to outpoint favourite Nathan O’Brien from Wexford C.B.S.
Daniel caught the Wexford boy with solid counters to win a unanimous decision.
Jason Breen had to settle for a win by W.O. as his opponent had to withdraw for medical reasons.
Matthew Tyndall had a good win in his semi-final bout against Thomas Monaghan from Mullinahone, winning a unanimous decision.
In his final Matthew confirmed superiority over Martin O’Connor from Enniscorthy.
These boys had met three times and Matthew was to win their fourth meeting by using his counter-punching skills to score with left and right hooks to keep the Wexford dynamo off balance .A good win for Matthew .
Sean Crowley was Arklow’s sixth gold medallist when he outclassed Ulster champion John Murphy from St Monicas.
Sean demonstrated the real skills of boxing by hitting and not being hit, such was his footwork and counter-punching. An excellent win.
Winning silver Damien Aibologa beat Matt Lambe from the Setanta club, scoring with fast combinations.
Damien had a great first round in the final against Tom Murphy of St Ibar’s but fell behind in the second and third to lose on points.
Daniel Feokrytova had a good win in his first bout, beating English boxer Amil Khan Wellington on a unanimous decision.
Daniel lost in the final to Irish champion Michael Donoghue from Athy.
In the semi-finals Michael Moorehouse gave his all against Tom O’Reilly of Athy.
Padraig Keogh, having only his third fight, never stopped against a very experienced Ken Dillon from Clonmel.
It was Padraig who finished the better but lost on points.
Josh Whitmore had a good win in his first bout against Paul Browne from Sliamh Lucra, winning a unanimous decision.
In his second bout Josh was in with European silver medallist Sean Cairns, Legacy.
Josh gave a good account of himself before losing on points.
Sean Fleming gave his all against English boy Mick Reilly from Lake Shore and lost a close decision on points.
Owen Moore had a slow first round and despite winning the second lost the third in a close encounter against Daniel Keogh of Liberty.
Philip Feokrytova had a real battle with favourite Roy Colgan, Avona.
Philip did most of the attacking but Colgan’s long-range shots was the deciding factor.
Arklow’s boxers will now prepare for a tournament against Holy Family Boxing Club, Drogheda which takes place in Drogheda on December 3rd.
Following this Arklow Boxing club will hold a test match tournament in The Gym on December 12, when it is hoped to feature some of the underage boxers, so all underage boxers must have their medical 2 passport photos and birth certificates in by Wednesday, November 15.
