Filmed over the course of a year in some of Britain’s toughest prisons, Lifers Behind Bars follows the experiences of long-term prison inmates, form their initial incarceration to release. Many of the men we meet are killers, and this first episode follows them through conviction and sentencing into prison, where they begin facing up to a very lengthy stretch. Because, as one officer puts it, ‘a 17-year sentence isn’t a big sentence here’.
