Wicklow’s war dead honoured
THE lives of all the Wicklow war dead were commemorated at the World War 1 Memorial Park in Woodenbridge recently.
The annual Armistice Day memorial has been taking place at the park for the past four years and this year saw close to 100 guests present, both from County Wicklow and further beyond.
‘We had a very good turnout, close to the figures we had for the opening, four years ago,’ said Wicklow War Memorial committee member Tom Curran.
‘We had lots of new faces, people whose relatives perished at war and who hadn’t attended before so we were delighted to welcome them. It wasn’t a sad day, however. People were happy to have their relatives remembered.’
Arklow historian Pat Power read the names of those who died aloud while his son and fellow historian, Christopher, recited a poem.
Maureen Hunt sang while Oisin Molloy played the Last Post. Wreaths were laid by representatives of the RAF Association of Ireland branch, the British Legion and the War Memorial Committee.
Refreshments were served afterwards at the Woodenbridge
Hotel.
