2017 races help Wicklow Hospice to the tune of over €35,000

VARIOUS runs held throughout 2017 ended up raising €35,015.63 for the Wicklow Hospice Foundation.

Most of the running events were held at different locations in the Garden County, while other volunteers participat­ed in various sponsored marathons around the country on behalf of the Hospice Committee.

Out of the total of €35,015.63, some €7,776.56 was raised by Ann Chambers, Declan McInerney, Jean Mortell, Denis O’Reilly, Pauline O’Connell, Liam Phelan, William and Christine MCCann, who all took part in the Dublin Marathon.

Thanks were also passed on to the Civil Defence for the important role they play at each run, while volunteers were praised for their efforts to ensure proceeding­s go as smoothly as possible.

Some races for next year have already been confirmed. The Wicklow Hospice Race Series Bundle starts on Saturday, February 24, with a 10K and Half Marathon at Avondale Forest Park.

A festival of running takes place over four days in Avondale Forest Park from July 12 to July 15 featuring 5, 10, 15 and 20 mile distances.

The closing date for applicatio­ns for the Festival of Running is Thursday, February 22, 2018.

The Fionnuala McCormack 10k and Kilo-Marathon takes place at The Beehive on September 15.

On October 1 a one day festival of running takes place in Avondale.

It will include distances of 5, 10, 15 and 20 miles and a full marathon.

Other events lined up for 2018 include a fast 10 mile road race taking place on March 10 from the Beehive Pub.

The closing date for applicatio­ns is Friday, March 9 at 12 noon.
