Youngsters on tour of south east

-

WICKLOW RFC’S minis travelled far and wide on Sunday morning for a range of friendly matches and blitzes. The club’s under-8s, 9s, 11s and 12s were in action throughout the south east.

On a bitterly cold morning, Wicklow’s under-8s made the short trip north to play Seapoint RFC in a friendly fixture. This was the first meeting between the two clubs for the 2010 age grade and both sides fielded two teams with four matches played.

On a perfect morning for running rugby, both clubs produced a try fest for a large crowd of supporters. Plenty of fine rugby was played which was only surpassed by the catering in the clubhouse that Seapoint laid on for the players. Wicklow’s under-8s are looking forward to hosting Seapoint for a return fixture in 2018.

The Wicklow under-9s made the trip out to Leixlip to take on a gathering of Leinster’s finest under-9s in a multi team blitz in Barnhall RFC.

The Wicklow players took on teams from Blackrock, Wanderers, Mullingar and Barnhall. The lads and lasses put on a sterling display in the face of some excellent opposition. They held their own against a pacey Blackrock outfit and battled well against an imposing Mullingar side.

It was a great day out for the two Wicklow teams who acquitted themselves very well and enjoyed the great atmosphere. After their matches they retired to the clubhouse for a well deserved feast.

Wicklow’s under-11s took on an eager Old Wesley outfit in the first ever meeting between these two sides and had the pleasure of playing on the 4G surface at Donnybrook.

Playing in cool, crisp but sunny conditions, the Wicklow side wasted no time spinning the ball out to the wings to open the scoring. A great competition ensued between two well drilled teams.

The game was played in three blocks allowing both squads to get plenty of game time. There were some super passages of play with great enthusiasm shown by the whole squad against a very determined Old Wesley side. A hungry Wicklow pack were to the fore in some keenly contested battles up front paving the way to success with a good supply of ball to the backs. The Under 11s can now look forward with confidence to the arrival of Old Belvedere and New Ross in Ashtown Lane in two weeks’ time.

Wicklow’s under-12 boys were on home turf on Sunday morning when they entertained their counterparts from Enniscorthy RFC in Ashtown Lane. Again, conditions were perfect for rugby and both sides put on some sparkling displays which kept the large crowd of supporters enthralled.

The visitors provided the boys with stiff competition but the two home teams rose to the occasion admirably, producing some fantastic rugby with tries aplenty.
