Avondale see off St Kevin’s to secure ‘B’ crown

THE final of the Wicklow Post Primary Schools Junior camogie ‘B’ championship took place in Dunlavin on Monday between the holders St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin and Avondale CC.
Underfoot conditions were not ideal for good camogie but both sides adapted well and showed skill and commitment.
Chances were few at both ends with defences on top. Avondale had the bulk of the play in the first half and led at half time by 2-0 to 0-2 despite hitting a number of wides.
The second half was even more keenly contested as both teams gave their all. it seemed for a while as if the half would be scoreless but as players tired in the heavy going, opportunities arose.
After Casey Byrne had pointed a 45 for Avondale Katie Tyrrell found the net for St Kevin’s after some strong pressure.
There were only two points between the sides now and St Kevin’s looked for a goal to go in front.
However the crucial score was to come at the other end when Sarah Nolan shot to the net after a goalmouth scramble.
St Kevin’s added points from Katie Tyrrell and Daisy Summer Cullen Dunne but they could not breach the Avondale defence in which goalkeeper Ava Whelan excelled for an equalising goal. Referee was Cathy Forde. Best for the winners were Ava Whelan, Thea Cullen, Lauren O’Reilly, Sarah Nolan and Ciara Clancy while Katie Tyrrell, Daisy Summer Cullen Dunne, Orla Waters and Emily Tyrrell impressed for St Kevin’s
The winners will now play Coláiste Bhride Carnew in the A final.
