The following matched three numbers and shared €100: Sue Dagg c/o James Driver and Maureen Flaherty, Carnew.

Mick Rossitter won the promoter’s prize. The next draw with the jackpot at €1,500 will take place in Kenny’s Central House on Monday next, December 11.

Tickets costing just €2 are available from promoters, players, committee members and in all local business outlets, your continued support is much appreciated.

The Annual General Meeting of Shillelagh G.A.A Club will take place on Sunday next, December 10, in Kenny’s Central House lounge at 3pm sharp.

All players, members and supporters are requested / welcome to attend, new members are more than welcome. We would appeal to former players, new members of the community, ladies and gents, plus anyone willing to get involved if only to keep a watching brief to come along.

Once again, well done to the Christmas lights committee and all their helpers. Through their efforts the beautiful village has once again been transformed into a kalidescope of colour with the switching on of the lights on Friday last, only those directly involved are fully aware of the time and effort involved in this project.

From all involved with Shillelagh G.A.A Club your efforts are recognised and appreciated.

We are delighted to confirm the acquisition of a €17,000 grant from the 2017 sports capital programme, this grant is ring fenced for the provision of a wheelchair friendly/walking/jogging track at the Fairgreen.

This is a huge step forward for the club and it is hoped that work will commence on the track in early 2018, to our Chairman Mark Dempsey and secretary Richard Lambert both of whom would have put a lot of effort into securing the grant. Well done.

JUVENILE CLUB

The Annual General Meeting of the very progressive Juvenile section of our club will take place on Sunday next, December 10, in Kenny’s Central House lounge at 5pm sharp, we would appeal to parents in particular to turn out in force at this important meeting, it would also be encouraging to see members of the adult club in attendance with a view to helping out with coaching etc.

As usual a full and detailed account of 2017 finance and activities will be presented, all interested parties are more than welcome to attend.

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

AGM - The attendance at last Wednesday’s AGM, which was well up to that of previous years, participated enthusiastically in the proceedings thus ensuring that transparency and accountability were the order of the day.

The coiste elected was: John Keane Cathaoirleach, Brendan Cuddihy Leas-Cathaoirleach, Daniel O’Connor Rúnaí, Larry Howard Cisteoir, Freda Kelly Oifigeach na leanaí. Gnáth coiste: Kevin Healy, Tony Duddy, Ciarán Goff, Ciarán Ryan, Peter Keane, Gemma Mahon, Gary Lehane, Fergus O’Brien, Gerry Walsh, Conor Monaghan.

IOMÁINT - Not to be outdone by their footballing counterparts (under-15A county champions) our under-15 hurlers played a major part in bringing the under-15B hurling championship trophy to this end of the county.

The Éire Óg hurlers were operating under the banner of the North Wicklow Gaels which comprises players from Éire Óg (13), Kilcoole (3) and St Pats (2).

Éire Óg: Patrick Byrne, Seán McCormack, Thade Shanahan, Eoghan Gurrin, Kieran Ovenden, Neil Browne, Joe Prendergast (Man of the Match), Daniel Healy, Luke Dorgan, Colm Short, Oisín Shanahan, Cillian Keane, Fintan Potts.

Kilcoole: Fionn Mansfield, Eoin Byrne, Shane Collins.

St Pats: Bill O’Brien and T.J Kehoe. Bainisteoirí: Colm Dorgan and Gary Coady (the day after his bainis (wedding)) with help from Diarmaid Potts and Gerry Curry.

There was an overlap of seven players between the hurling and football teams: Thade Shanahan who had captained the footballers, MOTM Joe Prendergast who had scored 1-02 in the football, Neil Browne, Daniel Healy, Luke Dorgan, Colm Short and Cillian Keane.

Incidentally Joe Prendergast was runner-up in the All-Ireland final of the Combined Athletic Events for schools which took place the week before in Athlone.

It is not ideal that clubs should have to amalgamate to form viable squads but it is necessary if, as in this case, juveniles interested in iomáint are to be afforded the opportunity of playing competitively.

However, with the work that is currently being done in promoting hurling at the younger age groups it is hoped nach bhfuil an lá i bhfad uainn (the day is not far off) when the clubs involved will be able to field independently.

NW Gaels opponents in Friday night’s final were the boys from Glenealy whom they defeated 4-16 to 4-08 after a heroic second half comeback.

Under-14 foootball: Well done to our under-14s who won a four-team tournament hosted by Cuala on a recent Saturday.

COMHGÁIRDEACHAS - All in Éire Óg extend their heartiest congratulations to Rathnew on their confounding of all the pundits in their defeat of current Dublin club champions St Vincents.

In so doing they have earned huge respect for football in the county and have shown that superior wealth and resources do not always guarantee success.

Unfortunately their giant-killing act did not accrue to their long term advantage (they were beaten by Moorefield of Kildare in the next round) – it did however evoke a huge sigh of relief among the clubs still in contention.

Well done also to Glenealy on reaching the Leinster Intermediate hurling final which, agonisingly, they lost by a single point.

Their derring-do in this extra-county competition reflects well on the Éire Óg Senior hurlers who gave them a good run for their money in the semi-final of the county championship.

COMHBHRÓN - The club extends its sincere sympathy to Jimmy Hatton, to our Uachtarán Danny Hatton and to all the Hatton family on the death of Jimmy’s wife Rose. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aici.

Everyone in Éire Óg was extremely sad to hear of the untimely death of Ciarán Hogan, brother of Declan who was for many years a member of our Senior team. The coiste on behalf of the club extends its sincere comhbhrón to his parents Jimmy and Ann and to all the Hogan family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam cairdiúil.

ST PATRICK’S

Well done to Kathryn Fox and DCW on their Senior ‘B’ semi-final win in Dunbur Park, Wicklow, against Blessington Community College.

At half-time DCW lead 3-0 to 0-7. A game of contrasts, DCW could get in for goals and Blessington were excellent at point kicking from short and long range,10 came from play and two from frees. Full time score: Blessington Community College 0-12, Dominican Convent Wicklow 5-04.

Best for Dominican College Wicklow: Megan Dunne in goals was just unbeatable, Sarah Evans, Aine Cahill, Kellie Phelan, Lucy Dunne, Amy Kavanagh and Siobhan Gorman who all put in a massive effort help their school to reach the final.

Hard luck to Wicklow Senior Schools who were beaten by two points by Louth Schools 1-15 to 2-10 in Roundwood on Wednesday. Hard luck to our own Padge McWalter (coach), and players Jack Dunne, Patrick O’Keane, Matthew Traynor and Ronan Murray.

Hard luck to our neighbours and Wicklow champions Glenealy who were so close to claiming a first Leinster Intermediate hurling title in Kilkenny against the Kilkenny champions.

It finished St. Patrick’s, Ballyragget (Kilkenny) 0-19 Glenealy (Wicklow) 1-15. Well done to Glenealy who showed Wicklow have good hurlers and can compete with the best.

St. Patrick’s GAA Club needs volunteers - Due to the retirement of John Smith and Patrice Evans from their roles in club communication we are looking for the right candidates to take over. Ideally you require knowledge of social media. Training can be provided if you can spare a few hours a week and have an interest in St Patrick’s GAA?

RATHNEW

The dust has settled and wounds are starting to heal. Our long and extended senior championship run came to an end last Sunday in a packed Aughrim.

The lads gave everything against a very good Moorefield team. On the day luck seemed to desert us as nothing seemed to go right, however we have no complaints as the lads have given us a wonderful year.

It was very much appreciated by our loyal red and green army who flock to Aughrim and beyond to support us all year. The whole village will have fond memories of our championship run 2017, thank you to all.

Tomorrow night, (Tuesday) we have a home game in the semi-final of the Dunne Cup against our neighbours St. Patricks. Throw in: 8pm.

We want to give a special mention and thank you to Patrice McNamara of 3 Rock Signs who designed the banner for the supporters to hang with pride in Joule Park. It really looked the part on TG4 GAA Beo, but If you look closely at the words floating behind the crest, it really defines us as a club and community and it will be seen in Aughrim for many years to come.

Congratulations to Shelley Culbert who was chosen for the county under-16s panel. We also congratulate another club woman, Abbie Doyle, who has been greatly representing the village in the boxing ring recently. All at the club are proud of your achievements.

It’s Christmas time and what better gift for any supporter than club gym membership or merchandise? Contact our Facebook page or any committee member for details.
