Forgettable weekend for Garden County outfits

- LEINSTER SENIOR LEAGUE ROUND-UP

IT was Bray AFC that came out on top in the battle of the Co. Wicklow sides in the Leinster Senior League this week.

They hosted St. Anthony’s on Sunday morning and it all appeared to be unravelling when Rian Greene put through his own net and then Anto’s centre-half Matt Mannix doubled the Kilcoole side’s lead.

But Bray didn’t throw in the towel. Greene made amends for his earlier mishap as he turned provider for Richie Golden who controlled well and dispatched the ball to the net from eight yards.

Home goakeeper Craig Williams then chanelled his inner-David Beckham as he set up two goals to help his side clinch victory. His first assist saw Tony Harris profit as the veteran steered his header to the bottom corner from 10 yards and Williams repeated the trick in the dying minutes as his wicked delivery was finished off by Darren Lacey.

It was a mostly forgettable weekend of results for the other Garden County outfits in Leinster. On Saturday, Greystones United, Blessington and Enniskerry all suffered losses, with Ardmore managing a 2-2 draw on the road against Seaford Rock United of Blackrock.

Also on Sunday, Blessington took all three points from their home clash with Boyne Rovers in the Major 1 Sunday.

The Friday feeling didn’t last long either as it yielded one handsome victory but two defeats for the Wicklow clubs.

Arklow Town were the side to land the win. Daragh O’Leary notched a brace, with Ross Hanley and Joe Ledwith chipping in with singles.

Wicklow Rovers scored three times at the Whitegates but a leaky defence saw them lost 3-6. Gareth Murphy, Luke Byrne and Ciaran McGettigan were the men on the scoresheet for Rovers.

Ardmore Rovers fired blanks as they lost 0-2 at home to Kilbarrack United.
