Wicklow Cup first round

Newtown United, runners-up in the Wicklow Cup for the past two seasons, began their bid to go one better this time around with a 2-0 first round triumph over Greystones United at the Woodlands on Sunday.

First-half goals from Dessie Waters and Neilly Martin saw the Magpies safely through.

Justin Melia put Ballywaltr­im in front against Wicklow Town, but that was as good as it got for the Bray outfit, as the visitors stormed back to win 4-1. Jack Geraghty netted a double, with Eddie Geraghty and Brian O’Sullivan adding a goal apiece.

Premier Division side Roundwood AFC eventually overcame the brave challenge of Dearg Celtic, winning 5-3 with goals from Patrick Woods (two), Keane Murphy, Kevin Lynch and Ross Doonan. Craig Brown replied with a double for Celtic, with Jamie Power grabbing their other goal.

Hat-trick hero Josh Graham headed an extra-time winner for Rathnew ‘B’ as they edged out St Patrick’s AFC 4-3 in a thriller.

Graham had earlier scored twice, with Evan Doyle getting their other goal as they raced into a 3-1 half-time advantage.

However, the Avoca side fought back to force extra-time, with Adam Browne (two) and Martin Kenny getting their goals.

Glencormac United had too much firepower for fellow Division 1 outfit Ashford Rovers ‘B’, running out 4-1 winners with goals from Nathan Watters (two), Sam Callaghan and Simon Doyle, with Gavin McDevitt replying for Rovers.

Elsewhere Arklow Celtic ‘A’ edged out Arklow United ‘A’ 2-1 in a local derby (see focus match).

Andy McEvoy Premier 1

St Peter’s continue to lead the way in the Andy McEvoy Premier Division after seeing of Park Orient 4-1 in the Phoenix Park on Sunday.

Jamie Kelly, Mark O’Sullivan and Chad Ryan hit the back the net, with an own goal adding to their tally.

Carnew AFC continued their perfect start to the campaign, with their fifth league win from five games as they saw off FC Locomotiv 5-1.

Eoghan Mulholland, Dan Nolan, PJ O’Keeffe, Conall McCrea and Wayne Kinsella scored for the winners.

Ashford Rovers overcame Dynamo Dublin 5-3 at Ballinalea Park, with Fiachra Ryan and Shane Dunne both netting doubles and Brian Coen also getting in on the act.
