INDOOR BOWLS

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Coill Dubh Take Over Top Spot - Coill Dubh Community Hall was the venue for this Round 7 Division 2 bowling clash on Monday, November 27, between Coill Dubh and Rathmore. A notorious venue for any visiting team to try and secure some points as the home side have perfected the art of winning most of their games in this venue.

As Athy even with home advantage surprisingly took all five points from leaders Baltinglass/Kiltegan it presented Coill Dubh with a prime opportunity to take over top spot.

However, even though Rathmore going into this tie are lingering third from the bottom of the table it would be very foolhardy to think of it as a foregone conclusion.

Rathmore are always a very difficult side to beat whether playing home or away, their inner belief will always make them formidable opponents.

Costly Error - Mat 1 was a very competitive match throughout. The visitors started off very well and built up a lead of 5/0 in the first four ends before Coill Dubh settled into the game.

It was the home team that did the scoring on the next four ends to lead on a score of 7/5.

Back came Rathmore to bring the sides all square on the 10th end, but on the next end disaster struck as an accumulation of costly errors allowed a score of seven to Coill Dubh to give them a lead of 14/7.

Coill Dubh now with that cushion, began to play with more confidence and pressed home their advantage to finally shake off their opponents and win on a score of 23/11.

Coill Dubh: Mary Hogan, Henry Farrell, Jody Gordon, Thomas Hogan and sub Albert Perris.

Rathmore: Detta Gaffney, Joe Watters, Rupert Hayden and Tony Fitzpatrick.

Hard Earned Victory - Mat 2: This was a mighty, mighty, hectic game of bowls between two evenly matched and committed sides. Apart for the first end it was the visitors that always seemed capable of causing an upset, even though they were never leading by more than a score or two at any time.

On the eight end Coill Dubh levelled up the game at 10 scores apiece, but on the next end Rathmore took the lead again by the slender margin of one, again the home team rallied and brought the sides level for the second time at 11 scores each.

Similar to mat 1 disaster played its hand again, but this time it was the home side that were the culprits, as errors on their part allowed their opponents a score five.

Coill Dubh narrowed the gap to two on the next end, but it was Rathmore that hammered home their advantage on the last three ends to secure a hard earned victory on a score of 23/15.

Coill Dubh: Joe Butler, Mike Hogan, John Moran, Joss Gordon and sub Thomas Baker.

Rathmore: Joe Cox, Ann Shaw, Pat Madden and Dave Pitt.

The three points gained by Coill Dubh just edges them to top spot, with the chasing pack of four other teams only a point or two behind. Rathmore will be happy coming away from this venue with two points, but their position in the table doesn’t change as they still remains third from the bottom.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The Senior men’s recent good run came to an end last Friday night when they lost 6-3 to Ayrfield United.

The lads had won their last seven games but it came to an abrupt end at the weekend.

They were always chasing the game, they fell 2-0 behind early on but Gareth Murphy pulled one back. They then fell 4-1 behind but yet again the lads battled back when they reduced the deficit with goals from Luke Byrne and Ciaran McGettigan to make it 4-3, unfortunately for the lads this was as close as they got with Ayrfield firing in a further two goals to run out 6-3 winners.

Our under-17As and 17Bs had disappointing results at the weekend, the As went down 6-1 away to Ashford Rovers with Nathan Sullivan nabbing their consolation goal.

The Bs gave it their all in their 4-1 away defeat to Aughrim Rangers, Nicky Kearney popped in their goal.

Saturday’s junior action saw the under-12As progress to the semi final of the Carlow/Wicklow cup when they drew with St Fiaccs to run out 5-1 winners on aggregate.

Josh Butler scored the Rovers goal in what was a very good all round team performance.

The 12D team who are playing a year above their natural age group recorded an excellent victory in their cup semi-final.

After finishing all square drawing 3-3 in a humdinger of a cup tie with St Anthonys, the lads went on to win 2-0 on penalties.

A brace from Sonny McHale and a single from Alex Dunne set the lads up for the dreaded penalty shootout but fortunately for the lads they came out the right side.

The 15As continued their dominance of their age group with a 7-0 second leg cup semi-final win to progress on a 17-0 aggregate win.

Goalkepper Andrew Nolan, who came out of goals, netted an excellent hat-trick, Josh Odlum fired home a brace with Dylan Cummins and Connor Lewins adding one a piece to complete the scoring.

On Sunday, the under-14 girls went down 4-0 to a strong Mount Merrion side in the Carlton Hotel cup quarter-final.

The girls went into the game short of several regulars but to their credit they gave a great account of themselves.

On the day, Eve Kelly put in a fantastic display at centre back, Abi Farrell also comes in for a special mention for her display in midfield and at right full back when moved there.

The under-14As exited the cup when they went down 2-1 to Arklow Celtic, losing 3-2 on aggregate, in a closely fought encounter over the two games this was a tie that could have went either way.

Mark Hodgkinson netted for Rovers.

The under-14Bs had an excellent 2-1 away win over Coolboy Rangers in the second leg of their cup semi-final.

This was a great result for the lads but unluckily they went down 5-4 on aggregate. Rory Hannon and Tim Hastie fired home the Rovers goals and they will look back at this and wonder what might have been.

Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round 9 next weekend.

In round 8 we just lost the one player when their selection West Brom failed to beat struggling Crystal Palace drawing 0-0.

Of the 11 players who progressed to round 9, six were successful when their selection, Everton, comfortably saw off newly promoted Huddersfield winning 2-0 .

hree Tplayers went with Stoke City and they done the business by beating Swansea 2-1.

One player moved smoothly into round 9 when their choice Chelsea swept a side Newcastle winning 3-1.

The last player to make it through went with Leicester and the ‘Foxes’ duly obliged when narrowly winning by a goal to nil against Burnley.

Our remaining 11 players will battle it out again this weekend to see who can move a step closer to the Last Man Standing title and the €500 prize.

Good luck to all remaining 11 players and once again a big thanks to everyone who participated in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

With the short season under the new calendar football season for the WDSL coming to a close, both our under-12s and 14s were in semi-final action and both were at home.

The under-12s hosted Sporting Greystones Black and they got off to the perfect start when Jack Coughlan scored a screamer from 25 yards.

Instead of building on this Newtown struggled for the rest of the half to forge any goalscoring chances and paid for this on the stroke of half-time when the away side equalised after Newtown failed to clear the ball properly.

The second half went along the lines of the first half where both sides failed to create chances of any note though Sporting did have a goal disallowed.

Extra-time came and went and the teams headed into the dreaded penalty shoot out.

Unfortunatly, Newtown missed their sixth spot kick and lost the shoot out 6-5.

The standard of the penalties that were scored were of top quality and the Newtown scorers in the shoot out were Jack Coughlan, Grace Murphy, Keira Farrelly, Patrick Martin and Max Synnott.

The under-14s hosted Roundwood F.C. in the second leg of their competition after the first leg ended 2-2.

Amazingly, the score at halftime was 2-2 with Newtown’s goals coming from Shane Synnott and Charlie Gregory.

In the second half the game turned out to be the “Charlie Sullivan show” as the Newtown centre forward scored four goals in a 20-minute period.

Bobby Dowling scored the final goal of the game just after Roundwood had scored two consolation goals of their own to leave the game at 7-4 and 9-6 on aggregate to Newtown.

On the day among the players who starred were Charlie Gregory, Charlie Sullivan and Luke Breen.

That’s it now until mid-February when the season will recommence.

Up until then the WDSL will be running Futsal over the coming months at three venues across the county i.e. Aughrim, Arklow and Newtown at the following age groups: Under-9s (2009/2010), Under-11s (2007/2008) and Under-13s (2005/2006).
