Welshman Dave Edmunds, who turned 73 earlier this year, spent six weeks at the top of the UK charts in 1970/’71, through Christmas and the New Year, with his version of ‘I Hear You Knocking’. It also reached the top 5 in the US, and was a hit in many other countries, including Ireland where it reached number one. ‘I Hear You Knocking’ was written by New Orleans rhythm and blues musician and producer Dave Bartholomew and first recorded and released by R’n’B singer Smiley Louis in 1955. There have been many cover versions over the years, but Edmunds’ rock ‘n’ roll treatment of the song remains the most successful. It’s his only No. 1 single to date.
