On a wintry evening under lights, St. Pat’s started brightly with scores from Tommy Kelly and Jordan Petticrew.

St Pat’s began the second half with a strong performance from Stephen Duffy who kicked some excellent scores against the wind. At full time the sides could not be separated St. Pat’s 0-09, Rathnew 1-06.

After some confusion it was agreed to play extra-time. St Pat’s played against the wind in the first half of extra time, with two scores from Stephen Duffy St Pats were in front 2 points to 1.

In the second half of extra time St Pat’s played some nice football with Stephen Duffy finding Shane Murley in space who scored two points with Stephen Duffy adding two more.

A good all round performance with excellent work rate throughout saw the lads emerge deserving winners on a full time score after extra time: St. Patrick’s 0-16 Rathnew 1-09.

RATHNEW

Our Senior team played St. Pat’s in the Dunne Cup semi-final last Tuesday evening.

Our late run and gruelling games in the Leinster championship told its tale on our lads, especially the dual players on our panel who had played seven weeks in succession including a Leinster final just a few days before. (Commiserations to Glenealy). Therefore with tired legs and niggling injuries we lost out to our neighbours on the night.

Gym memberships make an excellent Christmas gift and we have some great packages available.

Contact any member of committee or message our facebook page, Rathnew GAA 1885.

The club and indeed the Village were shocked and saddened at the passing of Matt Duffy late of the Bank Rathnew.

Matt was a great Gael and stalwart of our Club. He won two Senior football championships in 1970 and 1978.

He also won and captained Junior Hurling Championship winning teams. Matt loved dogs and enjoyed success with them at many shows.

He greatly contributed to the running of the annual dog show in the field and loved doing so.

He was also a great cage bird fancier. I personally will remember him enjoying a few celebratory drinks in the local pubs after our Wicklow and Leinster championship days out and while he chatted with management, players and supporters dissecting each game - he had a gleam in his eye and a proud grin from ear to ear. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him. Rest in peace fellow Gael.

KNOCKANANNA

Knockananna GAA Club would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended our super draw on Saturday night last in the Wagon Wheels.

This has been a massive success for our club and we are indebted to all our sponsors, our tickets sellers and to the generosity of the people who purchased tickets over the past three months.

The draw was overseen by County Chairman Martin Coleman helped by Dawn Byrne and our club Chairman Paul Lancaster.

Our top prize was a three night break in the Heights Hotel, Killarney for two people and was won by James Moran, Askakeagh.

Our second prize of a €400 Christmas shopping voucher was won by Seamus Kinlan, Roundwood.

The solid fuel stove sponsored by Eugene O’Brien was won by Helena Byrne. She also won 200 bags of turf as part of the prize which was sponsored by Jim Lancaster.

Paul Lancaster thanked all the ticket sellers and sponsors and particularly Tommy Kehoe who talked over 250 people into buying tickets and another seven people into sponsoring prizes.

Eugene Canna and Paddy Tracey weren’t too far off that milestone, coming in at just under the 200 mark.

He also thanked Michael and Lisa Kealy for their premises and sponsoring the DJ and all who helped with the draw.

A full list of the prizes and winners will appear elsewhere in this edition of the Wicklow People as well as our facebook page.

We would like to thank Martin Coleman for all his help to our club in the last five year and wish him well on his retirement from his position as County Chairman. Here’s hoping you all have a Happy, Holy and peaceful Christmas .
