INDOOR BOWLS

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Abbey’s Defeat Halts Their Unbeaten Run - Abbey Bowls (Abbeyleix and Ballacolla, Co. Laois) had to undertake the long journey to Allenwood to take on the hosts in the Division 5 bowling league Round 6 on Monday, December 4.

Having secured near maximum points in their previous five games they would be confident of continuing with this trend, and continue to hold the number one position in the table, as they have done since the start of the campaign.

Allenwood, on the other hand, before their previous round, were hovering fourth from the bottom, but an impressive display away from home against Clane/Staplestown where they took all five points on offer brought them up to mid-table and were hoping their recent good form would continue.

Surprisingly Easy Victory - Well! The cracker we were all expecting fell completely ‘flat on its face’ especially on Mat 1 as the home side on the first three ends raced into a lead of eight scores to nil.

When Abbey Bowls opened their scoring on the next end albeit by only one score one would have thought they would settle into the game. But far from it, the more the game progressed the more misery the hosts poured on the unfortunate visitors.

Indeed half way through the game it was very obvious that there was going to be only one outcome, as Abbey Bowls failed to ‘turn up’ for this one, for whatever reason know one knows, not even themselves.

Allenwood fully deserved their win and never eased off at any time during the game.

Surprisingly, this was an easy victory for the home side that would have expected a stiffer challenge from Abbey Bowls. Final score: Allenwood 21 Abbey Bowls 7.

Allenwood: Michael Sullivan, Bella Aungier and Betty Cunningham.

Abbey Bowls: Lolly Kavanagh, John McDonald, Mary O’Keeffe and Eddie Hayes.

More Questions Than Answers - The game on Mat 2 turned out to be an intriguing and strange match. On the first five ends there was very little separating the sides with the home team holding a slight advantage of two scores.

But in the next five ends the game suddenly took on an entirely different perspective as Allenwood completely dominated the exchanges and raced into a unbelievable lead of 20 scores against their opponents five. As on the previous mat this game looked all over with only five more ends to play.

Abbey Bowls decided to introduce a substitution at this stage, (Mary McDonald) and immediately the game took on another twist. What an exciting and spellbinding five ends we witnessed as the visitors suddenly found their true form, and had the home team reeling with an avalanche of scores to reduce the margin to two scores with one end remaining.

With Abbey Bowls holding four in that remaining end it came right down to the last bowl for Allenwood to redeem the game, and a brilliant shot from Henry Farrell under extreme pressure duly obliged by moving the Jack away from his opponents bowls and give his team a score of two, to finish up on a final scoreline of 23/19.

More questions than answers on this one, as to how Allenwood with such a commanding lead managed to let it slip so badly and almost paid the penalty, and for Abbey Bowls why it took so long for them to find their form.

Allenwood: Jim Kenna, Bríd Scully, Mary Jacob and Henry Farrell.

Abbey Bowls: Pat Fitzpatrick, Sean Delaney, Linda Byrne, Richie Lyons and sub Mary McDonald.

The five points gained by Allenwood moves them third from the top of the table, while Abbey Bowls are now only joint top along with Balyna who defeated Monasterevin in their last match.

Recent league results (home team first):

Division1: Allen 0, Kildare 5. Division 2: Balyna 5, Blessington 0; Baltinglass/Kiltegan 5, Coill Dubh 0.

Division 3: Caragh 5, Ballymore Eustace 0; Hollywood 5, Kilcullen 0; Straffan 2.5, Kildare 2.5; Ryston 0, Hollywood 5.

Division 4: Kill 4, Celbridge 1; Rathcoffey 5, Ardclough 0.

Division 5: Monasterevin 0, Balyna 5; Allenwood 5, Abbey Bowls 0.

WICKLOW ROVERS

Due to the inclement weather at the weekend all games fell foul of the bad weather, the senior men were due to travel to Naas for the third round of the Leinster Junior Cup but that was a victim of the bad weather as well.

Well at the time of going to print round 9 of our Last Man Standing competition was completed, we had 11 players left standing going into action at the weekend but that has now been whittled down to five players after the weekend’s series of games.

Two players went out after West Brom’s 1-0 defeat away to Swansea.

Two more players crashed out after Crystal Palace’s eventful 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth. A further two players were eliminated when their selection Newcastle slipped up 3-2 at St James Park to Leicester.

Burnley’s narrow 1-0 win over Watford was good enough to see three players progress to round 10 while Leicester 3-2 win over Newcastle saw two players make it through. Previous Last Man Standing champion Greg Dunne is still clinging on in there in an attempt to become the first player to win the competition for a second time.

Round 10 should be a tense affair. Good luck to our remaining five players in round 10.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

No on field action now until mid-February when the season will recommence with our under-12s and 14s playing their two legged finals as a curtain raiser to the official calendar season.

Up until then the WDSL will be running Futsal over the coming months at three venues across the county i.e. Aughrim, Arklow and Newtown at the following age groups under-9s (2009/2010), under-11s (2007/2008) and under-13s (2005/2006).

Our under-9s Black team were due to be our first team in action last Sunday but very poor weather conditions which would make driving hazardous meant that event was cancelled. Their games with Aughrim, St. Patricks Black and Shillelagh Navy will be refixed for a later date. The following are the Futsal details for our teams pre-Christmas;

Our under-13s team will have their first Futsal outing after Christmas on Saturday, January 13, in Newtown where their opponents will be Aughrim, Coolboy Rangers Girls and Sporting Greystones Red.

Week 6 of our Last Man Standing competition certainly contained lots of drama as we lost over two thirds of our players with only 15 players still standing after we lost 34 players.

Players who had selected Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Watford held their heads in their hands and cursed some players and referees who they will feel were responsible for their team failing to help them progress to Week 7 of the competition.

Its €450 for the winner of the competition and you can keep up to date with the LMS on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported this fundraiser, it is very much appreciated.

Only one player from the club celebrates a birthday in the coming week and he is Jake Robertson from the under-11s. Happy birthday Jake from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

Newtown Juniors F.C. would like to extend their sincere condolences to the Halligan and Starke families on the passing of Baby Amelia Halligan-Starke last weekend. May she rest in peace.
