MEN’S SHED

Christmas is upon us once again and we at the shed are quite busy ushering the great man in red around to greet all the boys and girls within our community, last Saturday, December 2. he switched on the lights in the village centre outside the Parkview Hotel to a very generous gathering of boys and girls accompanied by Mammies and Daddies most of the wee ones had their photos taken with Santa, who had lots of goodies to distribute among them all, and all had smiling faces even as Santa left to continue his trip around the community.

There is no need to worry if you happened to miss Santa on this occasion, for he will be in lots more locations in the run up to Christmas Eve where you’re sure to catch a glimpse of him, as his movements will be posted on the Men’s Shed ever popular Facebook page.

All the shed members are looking forward to their annual Christmas dinner this year in the Parkview Hotel, and because our membership has grown and our relaxation room in our shed is not up to accommodating comfort wise, our full contingent, we decided to use a somewhat larger venue where we hope to have an oul sing-song to our very capable musicians of which all are members of the shed.

We are holding a woodworking course in our workshop at the moment which is being attended by 10 members every Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. under the guidance of Joe our very capable tutor.

Finally we at Newtown and Newcastle Men’s Shed thank you all within our community for the wonderful help provided throughout the year, whether it was baking, visiting, giving of your time, or monetary support in any way we say a big thank you to all, and wish each and every one a very illness free Christmas to spend with your loved ones, and a prosperous new year.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

No on field action now till mid-February when the season will recommence with our 12’s and 14’s playing their two legged finals as a curtain raiser to the official calendar season. Up till then the WDSL will be running Futsal over the coming months at three venues across the county i.e. Aughrim, Arklow and Newtown at the following age groups under-nines (2009/2010), under-11s (2007/2008) and under-13s (2005/2006).

Our under-nines Black team were due to be our first team in action last Sunday but very poor weather conditions which would make driving hazardous meant that event was cancelled. Their games with Aughrim, St Patrick’s Black and Shillelagh Navy will be refixed for a later date.

The following are the Futsal details for our teams pre-Christmas: under-nine Red – Saturday, December 16, midday to 2 p.m. in Newtown (vs Greystones, St Anthony’s and St Patrick’s Black). under-11 Red – Sunday, December 17, 10 a.m. to midday in Aughrim (vs Ashford, Aughrim and Shillelagh). under-11 Black – Sunday, December 17, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Aughrim (vs Aughrim, Enniskerry and Coolboy Rangers)

Week six of our Last Man Standing competition certainly contained lots of drama as we lost over two thirds of our Players with only 15 Players still standing after we lost 34 Players. Players, who had selected Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Watford held their heads in their hands and cursed some players and referees who they will feel were responsible for their team failing to help them progress to week seven of the competition. Its €450 for the winner of the competition and you can keep up to date with the LMS on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Many thanks to everyone who has supported this fundraiser, it is very much appreciated.

Only one player from the club celebrates a birthday in the coming week and he is Jake Robertson from the under-11s. Happy birthday Jake from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC Newtown Juniors FC would like to extend their sincere condolences to the Halligan and Starke families on the passing of Baby Amelia Halligan-Starke last weekend. May she rest in peace.
