Fundraisers donate €27,000 to hospice

- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

REPRESENTATIVES for Wicklow Hospice accepted two generous cheques recently following two fundraisers.

Proceeds of the successful 2017 Wicklow Hospice Strictly Come Dancing event were handed over ay the Arklow Bay Hotel - totalling an impressive €24,000.

The second annual event saw a wonderful display of dancing with 19 routines performed by the competing couples for a worthy cause.

The event received lots of support and Wicklow Hospice was delighted with the final figure raised. Strictly Come Dancing will return on November 28, 2018 and rehearsals with Sean Smullen and Aimie Leak will commence in September.

Avoca Recycling Centre was the location for the second cheque presentation where Myles Doyle and Andrew Kinsella handed over a cheque for €3,020 to Bill Porter of Rathdrum Cancer Support and Evanne Cahill of Wicklow Hospice.

The funds were raised through the annual clothing recycling bank which is based at the recycling centre and in recent years, the proceeds have been donated to local charities which support those battling cancer and their families. A donation was also made to Avoca Senior Citizens. Speaking at the presentation, Myles Doyle, Avoca Recycling Centre manager extended thanks to everyone who made clothing deposits at the centre during the year.

‘ Thanks to everyone who recycled their clothes here and thanks to Wicklow County Council for their ongoing support,’ he said.
