THIRDCLASSPUPILS SEEKCYCLELANES

BOYS WROTE LETTERS TO A LOCAL COUNCILLOR TO STATE THEIR CASE

- By MARY FOGARTY

The boys of Mr Donohue’s third class at St Cronan’s school wrote letters to one of their local representatives asking for more cycle lanes in Bray.

The pupils were studying the theme of persuasive writing and they were also very keen to see more cycle lanes constructed in Bray.

They combined the two interests and decided to write to Councillor Joe Behan about the merits of having more cycle lanes in their home town.

He received 30 extremely well-written letters from the boys.

‘ Their points were indeed persuasive,’ said Cllr Behan. ‘ They talked about the health and safety aspects of cycle lanes with the reduction of cars and carbon dioxide and the improved health effects of cycling for children and adults.

‘ They also demonstrated their love of learning because one of the main benefits of having more cycle lanes in their opinion was that they would get to school faster and therefore have more time for learning! This is surely a testament to the great education they are receiving from their teacher, James Donohue,’ said Cllr Behan.

He read each letter carefully and said that the young writers made excellent sense. ‘ They asked me in some of the letters to contact the Minister for Transport about this issue,’ said Cllr Behan. ‘My next step will be to write to Minister Shane Ross and use the persuasive arguments that the boys in St Cronan’s made to convince him to provide more funds for cycle lanes in Bray.’

He will be getting back to the boys early in the New Year with the minister’s response to their campaign.
