PROUD DAY FOR THE CLUB

Wicklow RFC chosen to host Towns Cup final

-

The immense honour of hosting the Towns Cup final has been secured by Wicklow RFC. The news emerged at the recent draw for the first round of the popular provincial competition and the club already have massive ambitions in terms of both appearing in the final from a playing point of view and of hosting.

Speaking to the Wicklow/Bray People, Wicklow RFC President Bert Nicholson and PRO Stephen Clarke said that they were incredibly proud that Wicklow RFC have been chosen to host the competition and that it is another step in the club’s endless ambition to improve and develop.

“It’s fantastic for the club,” they said. “We have an association with Bank of Ireland who are the sponsors of the Towns Cup so there was a natural link there.

“We’d love to be in the final first of all and this is a great incentive for the players to put together a good cup run. The team haven’t been firing on all cylinders up to now but there’s no better incentive that this; to be able to play in front of your own crowd in your own club, that would be amazing,” they added.

Wicklow start their Towns Cup campaign with a home tie against Mullingar and while George Naoupu’s men will be taking nothing for granted they will fancy their chances to cross this tricky opening hurdle. Stephen Clarke described the draw for Wicklow as a “reasonably good draw”.

The memories from Ashbourne in 2015 when Wicklow defeated Enniscorthy to win the Towns Cup will no doubt inspire the organisers of the big day. A huge crowd descended on the County Meath club on that magical day where there was a marvelous sense of theatre and palpable feeling of excitement.

“It’ll be a fantastic day and we’d hope to get a huge crowd from Wicklow, the support has always been there. We have fantastic facilities up there now. We have three fantastic pitches, and all-weather training area and planning permission for a new gym. This is another step. It’s a stepping stone. In the last five years we have transformed the club in terms of playing facilities and we’re very ambitious,” they added.
