INDOOR BOWLS

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Hollywood Showing Good Form Of Late - Hollywood’s Division 3 team were far from impressive in the early rounds of the league, only picking up eight points in their first six matches.

Relegated from Division 2 last year, they looked in real trouble in this division also, lingering very close to the bottom of the table.

In Round 7 at home against Kilcullen they showed a vast improvement in form to take all five points in that match.

Coming to Newbridge to take on Ryston in this latest assignment in the Ryston Sports and Social Centre they would be hoping to continue that form of late to further enhance their position in the table.

Ryston also having been relegated from Division 2 last year started off their season in pretty much reasonable form, but of late have really dropped back alarmingly and now find they’re propping up the table lying second from the bottom.

Admittedly having lost some good players in the last year certainly has not helped their cause.

Having home advantage they would be feeling confident of taking something from this game, especially having shocked Caragh in their last home game by taking three of the five points on offer.

Poor Start - Mat 1 was a close game for most of the way, but the visitors were always in front having got a good start leading by seven scores to nil after four ends.

The home team fought back to reduce the margin to three by the tenth end and it was ‘nip and tuck’ from there to the 14th end, and the gap was down to two scores (11/9) in favour of visitors.

But in the last end a score of four closed out the game for Hollywood to finish up with a scoreline of 15/9.

The poor start by Ryston was probably their undoing as they were playing a catch up game for the rest of the match, but after saying that, Hollywood deserved their victory as they were the better team on the night.

Ryston: Eileen Kelly, Kathleen Moran, Harry McDonald and Gerry Tansey.

Hollywood: Seamus Doyle, Olive Houlihan, Kevin Byrne and Tony Hogan.

Foregone Conclusion - Mat 2 was a foregone conclusion from early on, as Hollywood were completely on top from the start.

At no time did it look as if Ryston would produce a challenge to the visitors. It was all so easy for Hollywood that it was only a matter of what the finishing margin would be.

Regardless of the result Ryston will be utterly disappointed with their display in this one, as they just did not compete on the night.

Ryston: Mary Doran, Jim McGrath, Mervyn Molyneaux and Michael Swan.

Hollywood: Carmel Tutty, Gerardine Malone, Peter Byrne and Padraig Metcalfe.

This victory moves Hollywood up to mid-table and out of the danger zone, while the table position doesn’t change for Ryston.

Recent league results (home team first):

Division 1: Brownstown 0, Castlemitchell 5; Hollywood 5, Kildan- gan 0; Ardclough 4 Caragh 1.

Division 2: St. Laurences 3, Athy 2; Rathmore 3, Balyna 2; Rathangan 5, Rathcoffey 0.

Division 3: Caragh 5, Allenwood 0; Kilcullen 3, Ballymore 2; Ryston 0, Hollywood 5; Naas 5, DonardThe Glen 0.

Division 4: Clane/Staplestown 5, Balyna 0.

WICKLOW ROVERS

We had a curtailed programme of games in the club last week, just three teams were in action.

The under-13As defeated Ashford Rovers 4-1 in the second leg of their cup semi-final to win 7-1 on aggregate.

Kai Fitzsimons hit his 10th goal of the campaign to set them on their way, Louis Malcolmson and Jack Noble both scored to move on to five goals each in the goalscorers chart.

Mikey Nolan completed the scoring with his first of the season to cap off an outstanding performance from the lads.

The 15Bs put in an excellent performance against neighbours Wicklow Town, after losing the first leg of their semi-final on a 6-0 scoreline they came out and put in a spirited display to win the second leg 2-1.

Keevan Doyle fired home his fifth of the season with a first of the campaign from Javier Perez Dirube ensuring the lads secured a well deserved victory.

Our under-16s drew 2-2 with Coolboy Rangers at Whitegates in their shield final first leg game.

Our under-17Bs went down to a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Ashford Rovers.

Darren went with Leicester while Greg, Gail and Jimmy selected Watford, Leicester went down 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace with Watford losing 4-1 at home to Huddersfield.

What this meant, as per competition rules, is the lads would share the prize fund as all remaining players selections lost in the same round.

AVONMORE FC

Avonmore under-12A v Coolboy FC under-12 - Well deserved win for our under-12A team today in the shield semi-final, beating a very strong Coolboy FC team 1-0 at home.

Nothing separated the sides, as both teams played some exceptional football, but a sweet strike from Mark O’Reilly soon changed that when his shot found the back of the net.

Gavin Cullen totally dominated midfield, laying off some great passes to Kian, Conor and Ethan who kept the opposition’s goalie busy.

Oscar and Leighton worked hard as did Kyle Kenny in the back line.

Rhys was solid in goal, keeping another clean sheet.

Even though we won, it was a sad day for this team as they bid farewell to their team mate George Oxley.

sGeorge and his family are emigrating and he will be a huge loss to this talented team. We wish him all the best but look forward to playing with him again in the near future.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

No on-field action now until mid-February when the season will recommence with our under-12s and 14s playing their two legged finals as a curtain raiser to the official calendar season.

Up until then the WDSL will be running Futsal over the coming months at three venues across the county i.e. Aughrim, Arklow and Newtown at the following age groups: Under-9s (2009/2010), under-11s (2007/2008) and under-13s (2005/2006).

For further information please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653/hughienolan@ gmail.com.

Both our under-9 red and under-11 red teams were in Futsal action last weekend.

In Newtown, the 9s lost to St Anthonys 9-4 with the Newtown goals coming from a David McCormack hat-trick and Gerry Hoban and they finished the day with a win, 4-3 over Greystones Orange with McCormack scoring another hat-trick and Alex Mackey scoring the other goal.

The under-11 reds were in Aughrim on Sunday and they suffered a very heavy defeat in their opening game to Ashford Rovers White.

In their second game against Aughrim Rangers they came back from a goal down to register a 3-1 win with Luke Turley (2) and Darren Fisher scoring the goals.

In their final game they played Shillelagh Sky and in this game they had to also come from behind as they turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 advantage.

Our goalscorers in this game were William Valentine (2), Pat Carey and Aidan Heffernan.

Both teams enjoyed the Futsal regardless of the results and will be looking forward to more Futsal in the New Year.

Our under-11 Black were unable to field a team on Sunday after a lot of withdrawals that we’ll put down to the busy Christmas period.

Our 13s team will have their first Futsal outing after Christmas on Saturday, January 13, in Newtown where their opponents will be Aughrim, Coolboy Rangers Girls and Sporting Greystones Red, while our under-9s Black team should also have their first outing on this weekend.

Week 7 of our Last Man Standing competition and the players are starting to thin out a lot in the last couple of weeks.

From last Saturday’s games we lost another seven players who had selected Leicester City and Watford among others.

With another couple of games to finish out the weekend a winner of our competition may not be too far away.

It’s €450 for the winner of the competition and you can keep up to date with the LMS on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported this fundraiser, it is very much appreciated.

We have three players from the club celebrating a birthday in the coming week and they are Aoibhe Perks from the Development Squad and two players from the under-11s, Jack Daly and Matthew Doyle.

Happy birthday to all three players from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.
