HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Mince pies, a feast of art, and good company, were at the heart of the years final lectures of the Rathdrum Historical Society in Brockagh Resource Centre on Monday, December 4.

Local historian, Joan Kavanagh, drew on the riches of the current exhibition at the centre to introduce members to various artistic presentations of Glendalough mainly from the 18th Century. Over a dozen artists were featured, each with their own distinctive ‘take’ on the ruins of the Monastic City. Joan’s personal knowledge of the antiquities at the site was very much on show as she evaluated each artists representation and authenticity, particularly in the light of recent developments.

A lot of work went into the mounting of this exhibition as pictures had to be sourced from the National Library and the National Gallery. It is unique and underlines the largely hidden treasures for a locality that lie in these two great institutions.

The exhibition represents a truly special initiative by all involved in local development in Laragh-Glendalough. It is still running at the Brockagh Centre and is well worth a visit for those who have not yet seen it.

GLENMALURE PURE MILE

As the year 2018 begins a new event is being organised in Glenmalure to celebrate its mining heritage.

Local history tells us that while lead mining was flourishing in the townlands of Baravore and Ballinagoneen at the head of the glen in the 1800s up to 100 hand held lights crossed the fjord at Baravore on Christmas morning on the way to Mass and church services. This heritage has inspired local poet, Seán Healy to pen a marvelous poem describing this event.

To commemorate this important heritage a 100 lights 3km walk will begin at Baravore car park at 4.30 p.m. January 6. Come and join us for this local event. Families are invited to dress as lead miners from the 19th century (this is optional). Bring your own lantern, dress warmly and wear suitable footwear.

Please note: some parts of the track is narrow and it is not wheelchair or buggy friendly. This event is weather permitting so please keep an eye on our Facebook page for any updates.
