Kids turn junk into pretty decorations
TWENTY-ONE children from across Wicklow were rewarded for their creativity last week as the prize-giving for the Wicklow County Council Christmas Decoration Comptition was held in County Buildings.
Ranging in age from four to 12, the winners were rewarded with prizes having recycled items that may have been heading to bin and turning them into pretty, eye-catching decorations. A variety of their creations were on display at the prize-giving.
The prizes were presented were made by Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, who said how timely it was to take a look at reusing materials at this time of year. He added that waste prevention through repair is an important sector to extend the life of products which can create and sustain local jobs throughout Wicklow.
In all, 26 schools submitted decorations for the competition and there were a wide range of ideas including snowmen, reindeer, angels, Christmas trees and nativity scenes.
All sorts of materials were used, including light bulbs, coffee capsules, clothes pegs and even an old dog’s blanket.
Some of the decorations were created out of materials most people wouldn’t even give a second glance to before placing in the bin.
Others were more complex and featured a variety of materials knitted together.
The Christmas decoration competition is now a key part of Wicklow County Council’s Christmas activities and brings a bit fun into waste prevention, while also delivering a strong environmental education across the county.
