GLENMALURE PURE MILE

As the year 2018 begins a new event is being organised in Glenmalure to celebrate its mining heritage.

Local history tells us that while lead mining was flourishing in the townlands of Baravore and Ballinagoneen at the head of the glen in the 1800s up to 100 hand held lights crossed the fjord at Baravore on Christmas morning on the way to Mass and church services. This heritage has inspired local poet, Seán Healy to pen a marvelous poem describing this event.

To commemorate this important heritage a 100 lights 3km walk will begin at Baravore car park at 4.30 p.m. January 6. Come and join us for this local event. Families are invited to dress as lead miners from the 19th century (this is optional). Bring your own lantern, dress warmly and wear suitable footwear.

Please note: some parts of the track is narrow and it is not wheelchair or buggy friendly. This event is weather permitting so please keep an eye on our Facebook page for any updates.
