WICKLOW ROVERS over-40s entertained their counterparts and friends from Arklow Town at Whitegates recently in aid of Parkinsons Ireland.

After a closely fought encounter, it was the Arklow Town men who ran out narrow 1-0 winners to gain revenge for last year’s defeat.

The decisive goal came on the stroke of half-time in what was a very exciting game.

With ten minutes remaining the floodlights failed, bringing a premature end to the match.

Rumour has it that Rovers scored at the point the lights went out but the referee was having none of it.

Also, it was mentioned that a mystery person had gone into Paddy Powers and laid a bet on Arklow Town to win 1-0 and this fuelled speculation that the mystery person switched the lights off.

Anyway, as per rules, the result stands at the time of abandonment, which means Arklow Town take the trophy back down the N11.

“A big thanks to the heroes of the past from Wicklow Rovers and Arklow Town for taking part in this game which was for a worthy cause,” said a Wicklow Rovers club official.

“A big thanks to the officials on the day Paul O’Brien, Tony ‘Butch’ Doran and Willie O’Brien who officiated the game so well and donated €100 to Parkinsons Ireland. Thanks also to Denise O’Shea who kindly offered her services in her role as physio to both sides, thanks Denise. A massive thanks to all the people from Arklow and Wicklow who came out to cheer the teams on while also supporting the charity.

“Finally, a big thanks to everyone for organising the event,” they added.
