Carnew’s ‘A’ team see off their ‘B’ colleagues

CARNEW AFC A CARNEW AFC B 6 4

A great game was had on New Year’s Eve in the annual memorial match for Johnny Behan.

Carnew ‘A’ opened the scoring with a rasper from Jimmy Behan but two quick fire goals from Brendan McCrea and Cormac Doyle had the ‘B’ team 2-1 ahead soon after. These were two great finishes after some sloppy defending from the ‘A’ defence!

A rash Jack Kearney tackle gave the ‘A’ team a lifeline from the peno spot, which Jimmy Behan duly converted!

Eugene Jordan was showing great touches in midfield, but the youth of the ‘A’ team took its toll on the ‘B’ squad as they scored two goals in quick succession from Cillian Gilligan to leave the ‘A’ team 4-2 up at the break,

The ‘B’ team changed things around at half-time and were soon on the front foot and Brendan McCrea showed his class with two excellent solo goals to pull the ‘B’ team back level at 4-4.

Matty Dowling was having a bit of trouble keeping a line on things, as the ‘A’ team lost their discipline after their defence was sold a merry dance by McCrea!

Things settled down and a very contentious goal from Will O’Neill put the ‘A’ side 5-4 ahead, and with the older legs of the ‘B’ team slowing down, Cillian Gilligan put the game to bed with a late free kick!

Final score: Carnew ‘A’ 6, Carnew ‘B’ 4.

All in all a great occasion with a nice crowd showing the support to both teams in memory of Johnny!

Later on, Johnny’s wife Theresa presented the cup to the ‘A’ captain and Johnny’s son, Jimmy Behan.

Great banter and crack was had in McCrea’s Bar afterwards.
