Cullenmore Hotel closing its doors
January 2002
ONE OF County Wicklow’s best known hotels is to close its doors for the last time on Sunday.
The Cullenmore Hotel, north of Ashford, is closing down for good due to the construction of the new N11.
Proprietor Dirk Van de Flier explained that the new Newtown to Ballinabarney section of the N11 would be cutting the hotel off from passing traffic.
The old road will be blocked off to the north end of the hotel.
He said that when the new road was built there would be access to the Cullenmore Hotel.
But in the meantime, it would be a meagre existence, he predicted.
‘Due to disturbance cause by the major road works on the N11 and the overall effect of the scheme on the hotel. The hotel will not be economically viable,’ Mr Van Der Flier stated.
A public house has been in operation on the site of the Cullenmore Hotel since the 1800s.
