NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

No on field action now till mid-February when the season will recommence with our 12’s and 14’s playing their two legged finals as a curtain raiser to the official calendar season. Up till then the WDSL will be running Futsal over the coming months at three venues across the county i.e. Aughrim, Arklow and Newtown at the following age groups under-nines (2009/2010), under-11s (2007/2008) and under-13s (2005/2006).

For further information please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653/hughienolan@ gmail.com. Our 13’s team will have their first Futsal outing after Christmas on Saturday, January 13, in Newtown where their opponents will be Aughrim, Coolboy Rangers Girls and Sporting Greystones Red, while our under-nines Black team should also have their first outing on this weekend (TBC).

Week eight of our Last Man Standing competition saw loads of drama unfold as we finally got ourselves a winner of our competition, namely JP and Sorcha (Dunleavy) who take the €450 prize after their selection Manchester City comprehensively saw off Bournemouth. For a while it looked like Paddy, Darragh, Ned and Gemma would make it through as their selections Crystal Palace and Southampton held slender 1-nil leads (shows the importance of getting the killer second goal) going into the dying embers of their games. Unfortunately late goals from Ayew for Swansea and Depoitre for Huddersfield meant they were denied as those games ended in draws. Sadly for Mick, Jamie and Luke West Ham despite taking an early sixth minute lead never really raised a gallop at home to Newcastle United as they went down to a 3-2 defeat.

So that’s it now till the New Year when our next Last Man Standing competition will kick-off on the weekend of Saturday, January 13, till Monday, January 15. Well done to JP and Sorcha on winning our LMS. (nice little Christmas present).

Many thanks to everyone who has supported this fundraiser, it is very much appreciated.

Four of our players celebrate a birthday in the coming week and they are David McCormack from the under-eights, Sebastian An- ton from the under-10s, Naoise Lowe from the under-11s and last but not least Sam Gillan from the under-14s.

Happy birthday to all four players from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC Newtown Juniors FC would like to wish all our players, members and their families, supporters, sponsors, opponents, league officials and referees a very happy New Year. We will see you all in 2018.

TIDY TOWNS

We enjoyed a great day out visiting the Dail on Thursday, December 14. Under the invitation of TD Stephen Donnelly the group left NMK and landed at the seat of power in Ireland. It was a great tour with access to the Dail and Seanad chamber while in session.

We spotted Gerry, Mary Lou, and Michael and Shane all busy about their business. Stephen the poor man got a grilling and a long list when he asked us what he could do for Newtownmountkennedy. We know he will do his best.

A great bus from O’Toole’s of Bray whisked us away home to Mountkennedy Inn where a lovely fare was laid on for us. There was great chat and plenty of laughter and a celebration of all that Tidy Towns has done this year. A great year, and awaiting another great year next year.

PLANS FOR 2018 – We are partnering with Newtown2050, Kilcoole Tidy Towns and Wicklow County Council to fundraise for the planned phase one Greenway connection to Kilcoole to give safe passage to our children to school in Kilcoole develop tourism, health and business communication between the two villages.

We then plan to connect NMK to Roundwood and Newcastle. This will be cycle and wheelchair friendly providing a safe secure access. It will improve transport between the two villages. We need percentage funding to apply for Leader European funding to develop the project.

To do this we are organising NMKs first Strictly Come Dancing on April 21. We would ask any persons interested to join us with your skills to help us organise this event to create this essential piece of infrastructure between our villages sandwiched between Bray and Wicklow Municipal Districts.

We are looking for volunteer dancers and business owners to come to us to help. A six-week course will teach you and your dancing partner how to jive, boogie etc to ensure a great night for everyone.

SECRET POSTMAN’S BALL.

Congratulations to Ger Roche our postman retiring this year. Many thanks for all the service throughout the year totalling over 44 years service.

The post keeps coming, brings news good and bad. The chat, the familiar car, makes the postman a friend as the post keeps coming.

Thanks for not rushing for spending the time, to take the news to their hearths and to mine.

To Ger, thanks for the post and for all the other things you did over the years, keeping an eye to all and helping to make sure that all our neighbours were okay.
