- By MARY FOGARTY

REVENUE collected €16.7 million in property tax from 53,100 properties in County Wicklow last year, with a compliance rate of 98.9 per cent.

The previous year, the sum collected was €16.8 million from 52,600 properties, and a compliance rate of 98.6.

In neighbouring County Wexford, €12.5 million was collected from 64,800 properties.

In County Carlow it was €3.8 million from 23,000 properties, and in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, €43.9 million from 103,500 properties.

In County Wicklow, there was mandatory deduction at source in 2.5 per cent of cases.

18,000 cases were deferred, 2.9 per cent, and 13,000 exempt. Exemption can be granted in a number of cases, including long term illness, nursing homes, and charitable activities.

The value bands differ greatly in neighbouring Wicklow, Wexford and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown.

59.1 of the properties in DLR were valued at more than €300,0000. In County Wexford that figure was 1.5 per cent.

In County Wicklow, 15.1 per cent of properties were valued over €300,000. The valuations were made in 2012, with a revaluation expected in 2019.

The figures were revealed by Revenue last Friday, and revealed total property tax receipts of €477 million nation- wide in respect of 2017.

This includes almost €3 million in Household Charge arrears. Commenting on the publication of these latest statistics, the Collector- General, Mr. Michael Gladney said: ‘ There is a continuing high compliance rate for

LPT, currently 97 per cent, and the vast majority of property owners fully comply with their payment obligations either in a single payment, or with phased payments.’

The deadline to pay in full by card or cheque is today, Wednesday, January 10.

Property owners who want to pay in full by Annual Debit Authority (an electronic cheque), and have their payment deducted on March 21, must confirm this with Revenue by today, Wednesday. THE building contract for the

Wicklow Hospice is due to be awarded soon and ground will be broken on the Magheramore facility once this is in place.

According to Evanne Cahill, chairperson of fundraising at the Wicklow Hospice Foundation, it is only through the tremendous generosity of the people of Wicklow and beyond that this landmark event will take place early this year.

‘ The great generosity of many friends and supporters has enabled tremendous progress over recent months with our plans. Month after month, events have been organised and run by volunteers to harvest the great public support for the hospice.

‘In October, the first invitation issued to potential contractors to express interest and show their suitability. Qualified contractors have now been shortlisted and are being asked to tender. We will organise the turning of the sod as soon as contracts are signed,’ she said.

It is hoped that patients will be cared for at the site in two years’ time, bringing an end to a decade-long campaign.

‘Our target is to have the building and fit-out complete and patients cared for in Magheramore in 2019. This will be the outcome of ten years of sustained effort by many dedicated people,’ Evanne said.

‘ Thank you to everyone who has helped us reach this point. We look forward to your continued support all the way to the opening of the hospice and, even more importantly, as we provide care in the new hospice from 2019 on.’
