Postoffice raided

January 1986

-

THE post office in Baltinglass was robbed for the second time in 14 months last week but this time the raiders may have been disappointed with their haul.

Three men, one of them masked and another carrying a cleaver, entered the Main Street prem- ises at 5.15 p.m. on Friday evening.

They jumped the counter and demanded money from postmaster Peter Murphy and his wife Anastasia.

But they may have mistimed the robbery and struck at a stage when most of the Friday payout had been cleared, as they only got £400.

Gardai have now issued an appeal to people who were in the Baltinglass area on Friday evening to contact them immediately if they saw anyting suspicious. They feel that someone may have spotted the three raiders, particularly with the fact that the local mart was in progress that day and brought in people from the entire West Wicklow area.

It is not known how the thieves made their escape as there was no getaway car seen after they left the post office. It is possible that they went a certain distance on foot.
