Braylinks with Dublin night safe robbery
January 1986
GARDAI are not ruling out the possibility that there may be a link between a Dublin bank robbery discovered last weekend and a similar crime in Bray two years ago.
In what was virtually a ‘carbon copy’ of a breakin at the Northern Bank at Quinsboro Road in Bray, almost exactly two years ago, raiders broke into the Ulster Bank at Baggott Street over the Christmas holidays.
Using cutting equipment, raiders removed iron bars protecting the Dublin bank, silenced an electronic alarm system and then burnt their way into a night safe.
It is not known exactly how much they got, but it is thought that the amount was considerable as a large number of traders and restaurateurs deposited their takings there just before the holiday break.
The robbery at the Northern Bank in Bray also took place over the Christmas holiday period in 1983 when thieves forced their way into the rear of the ground floor on the night of December 28.
On that occasion, the raiders also used cutting equipment to burn their way into the night safe and made off with a considerable amount - also pre- Christmas deposits left in by local traders.
