FIRST RESPONDERS

As First Responder volunteers we work with the National Ambulance Service and respond to 999 (112) calls in our immediate area that relate to cardiac arrest, heart attack, chest pain, stroke, choking, collapse cases and breathing difficulties.

Because each of the Responders live locally, we can arrive to the patient within a few minutes, we can then provide emergency medical care for these type of incidents while waiting on the arrival of an ambulance. We carry an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and can administer Aspirin if necessary. Each volunteer is trained in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation). We provide support and reassurance to patients and their families, often when they are at their most vulnerable.

We are now recruiting for new members to join our group, you do not need previous medical experience to be a Responder – Full training will be provided.

What’s Involved? – Volunteers must live in the area so that they could attend a call within approximately six minutes of being notified. If you can answer ‘Yes’ to all these questions, we want to hear from you. Do you enjoy a challenge? Are you good under pressure and remain calm in stressful situations? Are you ready to learn essential life saving skills? Do you want to give something back in our community? Do you live in the immediate area of Enniskerry?Do you have a full clean driving license? (You must have access to a car you are fully insured to drive) Are you in reasonable good health? Are you over 18?

If you or someone you know is interested in joining our group, please send us an email requesting an application form to margaretjoyce66@gmail.com. You will then be invited for an interview and we can then discuss what we require for this challenging role. All First Responders are required to be Garda Vetted. We meet the second Thursday of every month in the evening at 7 p.m. to train and practice our skills.

We expect volunteers once trained, to attend at least 10 of these training sessions per year to keep our skills up to date. Before commencing as a first responder a volunteer must attend a full day’s certified training, which is held twice a year.

The next training will take place in early 2018. Minimum Time Commitment: one Year. Hours Required: four Hours fortnightly. parish, along with candidates from Bray and Kilternan parishes,
