BOOK LAUNCH

A new local history book has just been published entitled ‘Aghowle – Where the Divil Ate the Tinker’ by local woman Margaret Connolly. This book tells the history of the townland of Aghowle which lies about four miles from Ashford on the slopes of Carrick Mountain, and is where Margaret grew up during the 1960s and 1970s. The book records the story of the close – knit farming community that lived in the townland for centuries right up till the early 1970s.

Margaret is launching her book on Wednesday, January 17, in Chester Beatty’s Ashford at 8 p.m. and all are welcome. There will be readings from the book at the launch. ‘Aghowle-Where the Divil Ate the Tinker’ is currently available from Ann Duffy’s Florist shop in Newtownmou­ntkennedy, Bridge Street Books in Wicklow town, McCoy’s shop in Laragh, and Avondale Sports shop Main Street Rathdrum. MEDJUGORJE

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Roundwood Historical Society’s first talk in the 2018 Series will take place on Tuesday, January 16, at 20 p.m. in the Vartry House (Kavanagh’s) and will be given by Peter Farrell, vice-chairperso­n of the RDHFS the title of the talk is ‘Charlotte Despard: Forgotten Anglo-Irish Radical. Charlotte Despard (née French) was an Anglo-Irish Suffragist, novelist, Sinn Fein Activist, vegetarian and anti-vivisectio­n advocate who published seven novels, was a founding member of the Irish Women’s Franchise League, the Women’s Prisoner’s Defence League and a member of cumann na mBan. Born in England in 1844, Charlotte moved to Ireland after World War I having spent a lot of time in Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon where her father was born.

Our thanks to Peter for starting off our 2018 series of talks with this intriguing topic on a lady who is rarely acknowledg­ed in Irish History. LOURDES PILGRIMAGE

There will be a pilgrimage to Lourdes from Roundwood in September, 2018. Names and €200 deposit before January 15 to Susan at 087 6273032. A pilgrimage to Knock will be on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8. More on both pilgrimage­s at a later date.

MEN’S SHED

We have a lovely couch with matching armchairs in the Shed but they are taking up too much room. So they are there for the taking. Talk to one of the Shedders or call 086 8650588 if you are interested.

ALGARVE TRIP

There are a few places left on the three star Algarve Coast and Country trip will take place on February 27 for seven nights which will include visits to Silves, Lagos, Sagres and Faro. CEILI DANCING

Adult ceili dancing classes are held every Wednesday night in the parish hall from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Learn to solo dance and also group dances under the tuition of Aoife, Cian and Eimear and have great fun learning.

Moneystown Community Centre Cards will continue as usual on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. while our Moneystown Dance will return on Friday, March 9.

MORNING BADMINTON.

Tuesday morning badminton is back on Tuesday, January 2, from 9.30 a.m. beginners always welcome. Some rackets are available.

WALKING CLUB

The Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group are back in action every Wednesday evening meeting at 7 p.m. at the Coach House car park. Everyone welcome to walk at your own pace for approximat­ely one hour in and around Roundwood village.

Rebecca Delamere will be running maths classes for Secondary School students in Roundwood Parish Hall.
