RATHNEW’S ABBIE IS BOXING CLEVER FOR SWEDISH TRIP

-

UP and coming boxer Abbie Doyle received plenty of local support for her fundraising night held in Doyle’s Pub of Rathnew.

The night included a monster raffle, some music and a live DJ and was organised to help with Abbie’s trip to Sweden later in the year ,where she will compete in the Golden Girl Championship.

The Rathnew native is a member of Enniskerry Boxing Club and has already proven her capabilities in the ring.

Just before Christmas she won gold in the Dublin Leagues as she stopped her opponent in the first round.

This month she competes in the semi-finals of the Under-18 Championships.

On February 1, Abbie heads to Sweden to take part in the biggest all-female, independent amateur boxing tournament in the world.

The Golden Girl Championship, then known as the Golden Girl Box Cup, started back in 2009 when 70 of the best female boxers in Europe came to fight.

In 2011 and 2012 over 80 boxers competed against one another.

2017 marked the highest numbers of boxers taking part yet, with 250 amateurs putting on their gloves and pitting it out against one another. This year’s championship takes place in Borås, Sweden over three days from February 2 to February 4.
