YOUNG SCIENTIST WIN
Congratulations to CCA students Jack Brady and Alex Brady, whose project titled ‘The Use Of A Mechanism On the Gates OF A Livestock Trailer To Reduce Farm Injuries’ won the ABP Food Group Farm Safety Award in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS on Friday, January 5.
Alex and Jack, cousins from Kilcoole, designed and created a mechanism to improve the safety for farmers as they are loading livestock onto a trailer. If the animal kicks back, the mechanism locks the gate, preventing possible injuries.
Their teacher Ms Corrigan said she was very proud of their great achievement, being a first for the school. Jack and Alex said they were delighted with the win and have now applied to patent their device. The boys were awarded their prize by ABP Food Group. An interview with both Jack and Alex will appear in next month’s Irish Farmer’s Monthly.
121 DIGITAL
The final 121 Digital class for this cohort of learners and volunteers took place on Thursday in CCA, Kilcoole. The 121 Digital Programme is an initiative in which Transition Year (TY) students volunteer to teach members of the local community how to use their digital devices.
The course runs over a six-week period and there is a lot of learning, fun, social interaction and new friendships made over the duration of the course. We had 20 TY volunteers and 18 learners from around the community in attendance each week. This included Men’s Sheds groups, Active Retirement groups and other individuals from the Kilcoole area.
A new course will be running in March. If you are interested in attending the new lessons in March please call the school reception at 01 2870198 and your name will be added to the register. Congratulations to all the graduates from this term’s course.
ARTS WEEK
Last week saw, yet again, another successful Arts Week. The subjects involved were music, Home Economics, Wood Work, art and Metal Work. There was a great reception for all the performers on Monday when the GP area was awash with talented singers, dancers and musicians. Fantastic displays of practical work from exam classes were on display in the GP area for the rest of the week showcasing the potential of all students involved.
YOGA CLASSES
As part of the Health Promoting Schools initiative, Ms Reilly is running yoga classes for all senior students on Monday evenings after school from 4.10 p.m. to 5.15 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity to unwind from the pressures of the exams. Places are limited so make sure to sign up with Ms Reilly to book your place.
GIRLS FOOTBALL
CCA Senior Girls played St Killian’s’ Community School, Bray on Monday, January 8, in an exciting game of football. Both teams were showed great commitment in the tackle, with some fine score throughout. St Killian’s pulled away in the second half, and were leading by five points, but the CCA girls dug deep, managing to draw the game in the final moments with the final result being 2-8 to 2-8. Ms Doyle said she was very proud of this determined effort by the girls.
CYBER SAFETY
The CCA Student Council are currently raising awareness regarding cyber safety which they are promoting all this week in the school from Monday, January 22, to Friday, January 26.
Some of the areas that will be highlighted over the week are the affects your digital footprint can have on job or college applications in the future, and how to stay safe online.
Members of the Student Council will speak to their own year groups next week during tutorial. All second year students will take part in a workshop on cyber safety. There will be a visit from our local community guards who will talk to all year groups in relation to online bulling and cyber safety.
Finally, there will also be a poster competition for junior students, with the winning entry being printed in next year’s school journal.
