DOMINICAN COLL ST KEVIN’S CC 5-08 4-08

THE second semi-final of the girls Junior football ‘A’ championship was played in Rathnew on Friday.

It was a game of fluctuating fortunes between two fine teams with the lead changing hands a number of times.

Dominican started the better and had two points on the board early on. At the other end a long range free hit the crossbar and rebounded to Caitlin Kennedy who shot to the net.

At the end of the first quarter St Kevin’s led by 1-1 to 0-3 but DCW were doing the bulk of the attacking and were rewarded with a Niamh Caffrey goal in the 18th minute.

They went on to lead by 1-5 to 1-1 but in the last attack of the half Emma Sully scored a goal for St Kevin’s to leave a single point between the sides when referee Eddie Leonard blew for half-time.

St Kevin’s hit the ground running in the second half with a Chloe Muldowney goal within two minutes.

The Dunlavin school added points regularly and followed up with a goal by Katie Lipsett in the 14th minute to give the West Wicklow school a lead of 4-5 to 1-6. St Kevin’s looked likely winners now and were playing with great confidence.

A Niamh Caffrey goal for DCW in the 19th minute gave her team renewed hope and when the same player hit the net again three minutes later they began to scent a possible victory.

In the 26th minute Dominican scored another goal, this one by Leah Murphy, to reduce the St Kevin’s lead to a single point. Dominican continued to attack and were awarded a long distance free which the impressive Niamh Caffrey sent over the bar for the equaliser.

Both sides had chances in an exciting finale with extra time looming but in was substitute Jennifer Madden who won the game for Dominican with a long range goal.

Well done to the coaches Kathryn Fox of DCW and Catherine Byrne of St Kevin’s for producing two fine skilful and sporting teams.
