Slí Cualann secure victory in Raheny

THERE was sweet success for a Wicklow team at last weekend’s Raheny 5 Mile race in Dublin when the women’s team claimed victory in the masters race for the second year running against some of the top teams in the country.

The Slí Cualann team of Annmarie Kenny, Catherine O’Connor and Sarah Bargya stormed home to victory in the race to become the only County Wicklow team to medal at the prestigiou­s event.

Bill Porter, Chairman of Wicklow Athletics, paid special tribute to the women’s team and congratula­ted all the athletes from Wicklow who travelled in big numbers to take part in the popular race.

There was other heartening news from the world of athletics when two Slí Cualann athletes secured bronze medals in the Irish Life Health National Indoor Junior and U23 Championsh­ips in Athlone.

Alana Ryan secured the bronze medal in the 200m race while Ben Browne Roche finished in third place in the long jump. Both athletes were competing under the Slí Cualann flag.

Bill Porter congratula­ted both athletes and said that both have a very promising future ahead if they keep up the hard work.
