But Town Clerk, Tom Byrne, warned this week the Council could not afford to lose a fifth of its workforce to redundancy.

They would be mainly outdoor staff. Already the council has let go 16 staff through compulsory or voluntary redundancies bringing the numbers on the council’s payroll from a high of 57 in December 1986 down to just 35 today.

‘We just won’t be able to offer seven redundancies as it would leave us drastically short staffed,’ Mr Byrne said.

The applications of the seven men who have applied for the redundancy deal have now been passed to the Department of the Environment for adjudication for eligibility.

A decision on the exact number of workers who will be laid off will be taken in the coming months.

The raiders then broke into the Chinese restaurant next door to the post office.

They left the restaurant without taking anything.

The ramming of the post office at Slaney Mall happened at 5.07 a.m. on Sunday morning, according to Gardai. The action was also captured on the shop’s security camera. However, the film does not show the registration of the vehicle used by the intruders. They are not believed to be from the area.

The camera shows that one of the men in the car entered the post office and made off with the property, which had a total value of over £2,000.

The thieves did not take any postal items, such as stamps or postal orders. According to the Gardai, the thieves then forced their way in through a window of the Chinese restaurant next door but left without taking anything.

He said he did not know the man and had never seen him before. He told the court that he had believed everything was in order and the man had assured him it was his own property.

Justice Magee handed down a £20 fine.
