TIDY TOWNS CLEAN-UP

The next Roundwood Tidy Towns Clean-up will take place on Saturday, February 3. Feel free to clean up along your road or estate or if you would like some company join the volunteers at the Old School from 8 a.m. A limited number of litter pickers, gloves, etc. are available by calling 086 8055040. Swimming starts Friday, February 2 – Friday, March 2, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Coral Leisure Centre Wicklow.

Following ages and strokes: under-eight Freestyle, under-10 Freestyle/Backstroke, under-12 Freestyle/Backstroke/Breaststro­ke, under-14 Freestyle/ Backstroke/Butterfly, under-16 Freestyle/Backstroke/Butterfly. LOURDES

There will be a pilgrimage to Lourdes from the 12th to September 17 for five nights full board at a four star hotel. The price will be €649 per person sharing. KNOCK

There will be a pilgrimage to Knock on Sunday, April 8, for Divine Mercy Sunday. Bus will leave Laragh 7.45 a.m. and Roundwood at 8 a.m. Price of €65 includes breakfast, dinner and bus. Please contact Susan at 087 6273032 to book a seat. Money in full before March 15.

HISTORICAL AGM

The AGM of the Roundwood and District Historical and Folklore Society will take place on Tuesday, February 27, at 20.00 in the Parish Hall, Roundwood. Please note that only paid-up members of the society, on the day of the AGM are eligible to vote at the AGM.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The next talk in the Roundwood Historical Society’s 2018 Series will take place on Tuesday, February 13, at 8 p.m. in the Roundwood Parish Hall. The title of the talk is ‘Recent Archaeolog­ical discoverie­s at Newtownmou­ntkennedy’ and will be given by archaeolog­ist Paul Duffy.

Paul is a site director with Irish Archaeolog­ical Consultanc­y Ltd., a Kilcoole based company who were responsibl­e for the archaeolog­ical testing and excavation in Newtownmou­ntkennedy. Paul has supervised and directed numerous prehistori­c and medieval excavation­s throughout Ireland. Paul’s internatio­nal experience includes supervisin­g excavation­s in France as well as leading large scale heritage surveys and exca- vations in Western Australia.

In addition to private sector work, Paul has extensive experience in community archaeolog­y and he was awarded Royal Irish Academy excavation grants in 2013 and 2014 for his project Grassroots Archaeolog­y and Irish Research Council funding for his Resurrecti­ng Monuments project carried out in partnershi­p with UCD in 2015 and 2016. Paul is a serving board member of the Institute of Archaeolog­ist of Ireland. He has published in numerous volumes and has lectured on his works in Ireland, France, Australia and the UK His research interests include community archaeolog­y, medieval settlement and defensive architectu­re. His book ‘From Carrickfer­gus to Carcassonn­e the epic deeds of Hugh de Lacy during the Albigensia­n Crusade’ has just been published.

On Friday, January 26, Judy Skates and Rowena Brady continued their winning spree by taking first ploace once again for North/ South, second Monica Brady and June Digby, third Ger Lenihan and Paddy O’Brien and fourth Molly Byrne and Rachel Judd. While playing their cards right for East/ West were Teresa Leahy and Marian Davies, second Maura Gaskin and Bridie Nolan, third John Loscher and Triona Woodroofe and fourth Nancy O’Brien and Catherine McGillycud­dy.

MEN’S SHED

Roundwood Men’s Shed: Following our most recent series of digital lessons one of our SHEDDERS has decided to take his fully charged mobile with him when he completes the life marathon which we have referred to in the past. The phone will be taken with him to the grave and when he gets to the ‘other side’ he will be able to communicat­e with the SHEDDERS down on earth and fill them in on the good life up above. ‘That is not going to happen’, one of the SHED wits commented,’ because with the phone melting in the flames, there’ll be no signal coming from where you’re going’. As well as the tea and cake and biscuits, there is regular banter in the SHED at the gatherings on Tuesdays between 10 and 12. You will be assured of a warm welcome if you come along.

CEILI DANCING

Adult ceili dancing classes are held every Wednesday night in the parish hall from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Learn to solo dance and also group dances under the tuition of Aoife, Cian and Eimear and have great fun learning.

MONEYSTOWN CENTRE

Moneystown Community Centre Cards will continue as usual on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. while our Moneystown Dance will return on Friday, March 9, Tuesday morning badminton continues from 9.30 a.m. beginners always welcome. Some rackets are available.

WALKING CLUB

The Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group are back in action every Wednesday evening meeting at 7 p.m. at the Coach House car park. Everyone welcome to walk at your own pace for approximat­ely one hour in and around Roundwood village.
