DARKNESS INTO LIGHT’S €103,000 TRIUMPH

- By MARY FOGARTY

LAST YEAR’S Darkness into Light in Bray has broken records, with a total amount raised exceeding a huge €103,000, organisers have announced.

The walk took place in the early hours of May 6 last year, with around 4,000 people covering the 5km route. It was part of a nationwide campaign to raise money for Pieta House, the centre for the prevention of self-harm and suicide. Thousands of people arrived at the bandstand at 4 a.m. to tackle the route as the sun came up.

Organisers thanked everyone who took part or supported the walk in any way, and urged people to sign up for this year’s walk on May 12 at 4.15 a.m.

THE final figure for the 2017 Bray Darkness into Light was over €103,000.

Organisers thanked everyone who supported the event for Pieta House and said that it was an amazing result. This year’s dawn walk will take place on Saturday, May 12, at 4.15 a.m. Almost 4,000 people turned out at four in the morning on a very cold morning last May to cover 5km as the sun came up in Bray. Participants either walked or ran the route, which included the notoriously difficult climb of the Putland Hill.

This was a record crowd of the Bray walk, with twice the number of participants of the first event in 2014.

In 2016, Bray walkers raised €81,000 for Pieta House. This brings the total raised locally since the start of the event o more than €350,000. This is part of a nationwide initiative to support the suicide prevention charity.

Pieta House, the centre for the prevention of self-harm or suicide, opened in Lucan, County Dublin in January 2006.

Since then, they have also opened two outreach centres in Tallaght and Finglas in Dublin as well as three centres of excellence in Ballyfermot in Dublin, Mungret in Limerick and Roscrea in Tipperary.
