DEREK ELECTED CATHAOIRLE­ACH

Cllr Derek Mitchell was unanimousl­y elected Cathaoirle­ach of Greystones Municipal District last Tuesday evening.

Cllr Mitchell took over from Cllr Gerry Walsh, who had served for six months. The two had agreed to share a year, as there are six members and a five-year council. Cllr Mitchell thanked Gerry for all the work done during his term, and his good manner with all people.

‘I hope during my time to get a timetable to finish the harbour; move towards getting a plan to improve the rail service; move forward the road improvemen­ts from Delgany to Blacklion; get the “Greystones Way” marked as a Waymarked trail from the Dart to the Sugar Loaf; move forward getting a path to Kilcoole Station and find some way of stopping camper vans camping all summer on the road,’ said Cllr Mitchell.

‘I am also pushing the system as hard as I can to get the N11 improvemen­t project moved forward, a task which will take some years.’

Derek is married to Carol and they have three adult children. He spent 22 years campaignin­g to get the DART extended to Greystones, which is how he got into politics, and then 15 years working to get Greystones Harbour rebuilt.
