NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Five of our teams were in Futsal action again last weekend. No word from the under-11 Black gaffer regards how they got on in Arklow on Sunday at the time of going to press!

The under-11s Red team played Shillelagh in Newtown and in a game full of goals, thrills and spills Shillelagh edged the game by the odd couple of goals. Aidan Heffernan, William Valentine, Pat Carey, Frank Lang, Ryan Collins, Sebatian Anton, Luke Turley, David Mackey and Darren Fisher saw action on the day for the 11’s.

The 13’s played on Saturday against Aughrim and Ashford Rovers in Newtown and the players and the goals went as follows, Martin Kelly (5), Aaron Cawley (3), Paudie Gammell (3), Bogdan Rusu (2) and Jack Coughlan (1). Aaron Hackett in goal also played his part.

On Sunday both our under-nine team’s played. The Red team played in Aughrim where they won two and lost only one of their games on the day. Their squad was David McCormack, Bobby Spillane, Erik Lis, Gerry Hoban, Alex Mackey, Tyler Doyle, Nathan Donohoe and Kayla Hamilton. The under-nine Black team travelled to Arklow and they also won two and lost one of their three games. On the day their squad was Leighton Byrne, JV Kelly, Lucas Dowdall, Leon O’Connor, Alex Ryan, Ryan McDonald and John Turley. Well done, everyone.

The following are next week’s WDSL Futsal fixtures for Sat/ Sunday, February 10/11: under-nine Black team in Aughrim on Sunday – 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; under-nine Red – to be confirmed; under-11 Red team in Aughrim on Sunday – 10 a.m. to midday; under-11 Black team in Arklow on Sunday – 10 a.m. to midday; under-12s away to Greystones B ko to be confirmed (Interim Cup Final first Leg); under-14s away to Glencormac Utd ko Sunday at 11 a.m. (Interim Cup Final first Leg) (Fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

Our teams will be back in training very soon, in fact some of the team’s are back the past couple of weeks. All respective team coaches will inform all players in due course, so don’t forget please communicat­e. There are a couple of slots on all our teams at the moment so if there are any girl’s or boys who would like to join the club please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653.

Our latest Last Man Standing competitio­n continued with its week two fixtures. We had 70 Players left standing going into week two. With one game remaining last weekend we have lost a further 18 Players after Leicester City, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and West Brom all failed to win. Week three fixtures are for the weekend of Feb- ruary 10 to February 12. Many thanks everyone for your continued support.

We have four players from the club celebratin­g a birthday in the coming week and they are under-eights duo Gerry Hoban and Nathan Donohoe, Cillian Coffey from the under-11s and Darragh Heffernan from the under-14s. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

On a sadder note everyone in the club would like to extend their sincere sympathies to Dominic Leech and his family on the sad passing of his father last week. May he rest in peace.

RETIREMENT

After 44 years of service our postman Ger Roche is retiring. Newtown and District Tidy Towns has organised a night in the Parkview for Thursday, February 8, at 7, 30 p.m. for Ger and Sgt. Gormley, who is also retiring after 20 years in Newtownmou­ntkennedy.

We would like to express our thanks to Ger and Ciaran for all their years of great work and to wish them well with some light refreshmen­ts.
