Another vital win for Arklow on the road

ARKLOW RFC TULLOW RFC 35 26

THE Arklow RFC under-14 girls travelled to Tullow last week for yet another tricky away game in a league with the most unforgiving fixture list.

Having defeated Naas away so comprehensively the previous week, the Arklow team were tasked with an early fixture against a determined Tullow side.

As has so often been the trait of this team they established themselves early with a try from Clodagh Lee inside seven minutes. This was followed up by two more tries from Grainne Flynn, leaving the score at 19-0 to Arklow.

However, the home team would not allow themselves be intimidated by Arklow’s impressive start and replied with two tries before half-time.

With the scoreline at 19-12 to Arklow and Tullow’s confidence growing, the away team’s character was very much put to the test.

Tullow began the second half as they had finished the first with increased possession. However, strong tacking from Ava Kavan- agh, Emma Keane, Leah Hershee and Lara Prestage held them out at a crucial time, allowing Arklow compose themselves and re-establish a foothold on the game.

Tries from Ava Kavanagh, Jane Neill and Leah Hershee left the score at 35-12 to Arklow midway through the second half and relieved the pressure (not the mention the stress from the travelling support).

However, as tiredness began to set in, Tullow managed to get back into the game and got two late tries leaving a final score of 35-26.

With an early kick off in Carlow this was probably this team’s most difficult encounter in some time and it speaks volumes about this team’s character that they would not allow Tullow recover despite relentless pressure from the home side.

They now once again travel to Enniscorthy in their final match of the campaign knowing that a win will secure a play-off position.
