Milestone as Gorey branch rebranded as Altura Credit Union

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

GOREY Credit Union was rebranded as Altura Credit Union Ltd last week.

Tom Brennan of Gorey Credit Union said the rebrand will see the credit union strengthen its position in the market.

‘Recent years have seen changes for many credit unions Nationally Gorey Credit Union has reached several milestones reached in these years. In 2015 a successful transfer of engagements with Avonmore Credit Union Ltd saw Gorey take on three branches in Co. Wicklow.

‘In 2016 a motion was passed to expand the common bond area to a 10 mile radius of Avoca, Gorey, Kilmuckridge, Laragh, Rathdrum and Roundwood, effectively doubling the area in Co. Wicklow, and south of Kilmuckridge.

A motion the change the name of the credit union was also passed if the need for such a name change arose.

‘Last year the motion was passed to change the name to Altura Credit Union Ltd. This is a key part to the future success of the credit union. As our common-bond area now stretches from South Bray, all the way down past Curracloe, our area is no longer predominantly Gorey based.

‘ The new name will help us to successfully grow into this area. The common bond was expanded in mid 2017, following Central Bank approval so it is the right time for a change.

‘Our membership is a thriving 28,000 with a good mix across the demographic. We currently have over €53,000,000 out in loans. We are a strong, progressive credit union. Having Gorey over the door in three Wicklow branches just didn’t fit.

‘ The name Altura was chosen to represent the growth that this credit union has and is experiencing rising elevation while acknowledging the achievements of the past and to recognise the heights we must strive to achieve both now and into the future for our thriving credit union.

‘Altura can also mean dignified, noble and at different stages. The many interpretations of this are one of the reasons this was chosen. We can effectively market Altura Credit Union Ltd without geographical restriction. It was essential we changed our name in order to fully penetrate the recently extended common bond areas, facilitate future mergers and to ensure growth and sustainability of all branches. We are fully committed to growing the business and involvement on all our communities.’

Tom said the new name change has received a very responsive reaction from members. Account numbers and member’s pin numbers will remain the same.

The new website is www. alturacu.ie, the email is now info@alturacu.ie and the phone numbers remain the same.
