Shock at sudden death of popular publican Gerry

-

There was shock and sadness throughout Aughrim and surrounding communities following the untimely death of popular businessman Gerry Phelan.

Gerry who has run the Meath Arms public house and bed and breakfast for many years passed away suddenly in the early hours of Sunday morning on the premises.

Since the news of his sad death broke, warm tributes have flooded in, with many remembering Gerry’s warm welcome and great storytelling behind the bar.

Former Ireland international rugby player and cousin to Gerry, Shane Byrne said that the entire community is in shock over the loss and described it as a ‘ tragic accident’.

‘It is the definition of a tragedy, an unfortunate accident when Gerry slipped outside in the snow. He was staying on the premises overnight to do breakfast as the B&B was a full house. It was when Gerry didn’t show up that concern grew,’ said Shane.

‘He was a very well known guy and many people went to the Meath Arms or Paddy Phelan’s as it is known locally, because of the banter with Gerry. He had a great way to entertaining people with loads of lesser-known stories about old Aughrim characters. He enjoyed life and was at the heart of Paddy Phelan’s,’ he said.

Gerry was a great sportsman and fan and only hours before his passing, had revelled in the success of the Irish rugby team’s Grand Slam win on St Patrick’s Day in Twickenham.

He was a former member and supporter of Arklow Rugby Club and was a member of the victorious team that won the Provincial Town’s Cup for the first time in 1985.

Arklow Rugby Club posted a kind tribute to Gerry on Facebook and extended sympathy to the Phelan family.

‘ Though no longer involved in the club Gerry could always be relied when asked to support an event or buy a ticket and regularly enquired after the club’s well being. He was, as always a true gentleman and offered his support to the club in any way he could,’ it read.

Gerry was also a keen golfer and was a former captain at Woodenbridge Golf Club.

Gerry is survived by his wife Danuta and children Niall, Conor and Nina, brothers Colm and Paul, sister Marie, mother-in-law Maureen, nieces, nephews extended family and friends.

He will be laid to rest in Macreddin Cemetery on Thursday following funeral mass in Church of the Most Sacred Heart, Aughrim.
