INDOOR BOWLS

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Castlemitchell Overcome Stern Test From Allenwood - It was a long journey for Allenwood to travel to take on Castlemitchell in this Division 5 bowling league match in the Castlemitchell Community Hall.

The visitors holding third spot from the top were hoping to repeat the feat of taking all five points as they did in their home fixture.

The maximum points would not change their position in the league table but it would leave them within four points behind the leaders.

Castlemitchell on the other hand would be very motivated on two counts, number one would be to avenge their loss on their away game to this opposition and number two if they succeeded in winning the five points it would bring them up to joint third with Allenwood.

With home advantage it was not beyond the bounds of possibility but a massive effort would be required.

Thoroughly enjoyable - Castlemitchell got off to a flyer on Mat A by scoring four on the first end before Allenwood knew what hit them.

But this rapid setback didn’t seem to unsettle the visitors by any manner or means, as within a short period the margin was reduced to two scores.

However, the home side had increased that lead to five coming up to the half way stage of the game and looked that little bit more composed.

If anyone thought that Allenwood would fade out of the game they were badly mistaken, because on the ninth end the sides were all square on ten scores apiece.

Castlemitchell once again regained the upper hand by moving three scores clear, but the response from the opposition was swift as the reduced it back to one.

The host piled on the pressure to take a lead of four with only one end remaining.

Although Allenwood replied on the last end with a score of one it just wasn’t enough, as Castlemitchell held out to win on a finishing score of 16/13. This was a thoroughly enjoyable game throughout.

Castlemitchell: Denis Banbrick, Breda Cuddy, Dave Mulhall and John Cuddy.

Allenwood: Bríd Scully, Mary Jacob, Bella Aungier and Betty Cunningham.

The One That Got Away - Allenwood were the dominant force on Mat B up to the half way mark, as they completely outscored their opponents time and time again and were leading at that stage by thirteen scores to four.

Unfortunately for them Patricia Fanning who was having a very good game had to be withdrawn due to feeling unwell and had to be replaced with a substitute.

This seemed to knock the rhythm and momentum out of the team, this was in no way the fault of the substitute but the team looked unsettled after this, and with eight ends still remaining Allenwood failed to score on seven of these, it was only on the last end that they registered a score and this was only a score of one.

Castlemitchell ended up the winners on a score of 19/14. Allenwood will feel this is the one that got away.

Castlemitchell: Tony Hyland, Aishling Hyland, Jim Kelly and Tom Harris.

Allenwood: Ann Dunne, Pat Fanning, James Kenna, Henry Farrell and sub Maura Doyle.

WICKLOW ROVERS

Well the bad weather reared its head again at the weekend, just when we thought the Beast from the East and Storm Emma were confined to the history books we were hit with another Siberian blast in the early hours of Sunday morning bringing another bout of snow.

This cold snap put paid to all junior games involving our teams over the weekend.

One game that did manage to go ahead at the weekend was our senior men’s home game on Friday night against Rathmichael Shankill.

Luckily the game was scheduled for Friday before the bad weather moved in.

The first half was deprived of any clear cut chances with both sides cancelling each other out; Rovers probably just shaded the first period with Ciaran McGettigan forcing the keeper into a good save.

The second period saw Rovers come out with more intent and they were rewarded in the 48th minute when Ciaran McGettigan got on the end of a Gareth Murphy cross to fire powerfully home into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

The lads continued to press forward creating chance after chance, Alan Delaney went close after 55 minutes but his effort was just off target.

In the space of a minute at the midway point of the half, Ciaran McGettigan and Gareth Murphy were both denied by the away keeper.

It was all Rovers in the second half with the Shankill keeper denying the lads on three more occasions - saving well from Ciaran McGettigan, Gareth Murphy and Luke Byrne.

Shane Doyle in the Rovers goal had a relatively quiet night between the posts but in the closing minutes, he had to be alert to bravely save at the feet of the Shankill striker.

The insurance goal eventually came when second half substitute Luke Byrne got on the end of a Ciaran McGettigan through ball to coolly slot the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0 and ensure the three points were going to Rovers.

The icing was put on the cake in injury time when Luke Byrne cut in from the right and then blasting home to give the lads a well deserved 3-0 victory, which means they go top of the table and puts them very much in the mix for the title.

On the night, there were several good performances but it was centre half Lenny Carton who just edged the nomination for man of the match for the way he marshalled his defence, he was solid in defence, assured on the ball and led by example.

Our junior members represented our club in the St Patricks Day Parade. Well done to all our junior members for turning out for the club.

A big thanks to Robbie Dover and Charlie Mitchell for organising the kids for the parade, thanks to all the managers and parents for supervising the kids on the day.

Also thanks to Paul Delaney for seeing the lads off at the start and locking up the grounds.

Thanks to Rosemary and Franny Copeland who were at the finish of the parade to hand out goodie bags to all the kids that took part in the parade.

Our under-14 girls travelled to England at the weekend and on Saturday they took in the FA cup tie between Manchester United and Brighton.

The girls were given a welcome message and their team photo in the match day programme.

On Sunday they participated in two training sessions where they got to meet Jamie Carragher. Jamie shared stories with the girls and then posed for photos with the girls and the parents.

The girls packed a lot into their weekend and their journey can be followed on our club Facebook page. A big thanks goes out to Niall Cull for organising the trip for the girls and a massive thanks to all the parents who helped out.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Unfortunately there weren’t many fixtures down for decision last weekend.

The only one, the under-9 Red’s Futsal final against St. Anthonys was cancelled due to the ‘Pest from the West’ or the ‘Son of the Beast’, or whatever it was called.

Heavy snow over the weekend left roads in a dangerous condition leading to the decision to cancel. The game will be refixed in the weeks ahead.

Also, well done to everyone who turned out to march with the club in the St. Patricks Day parade. In bitter cold all of you plus all the other club’s and organisations deserve a huge pat on the back.
