Men urged to do secretarial studies

March 1985

-

A Bray school is hoping to encourage more men to look for employment in the female dominated secretarial jobs market.

St Thomas’ Community College principal, Matt Murphy, wants to see more boys training for careers in this area when the schools secretarial studies centre opens its doors next September.

‘ Traditionally, virtually every secretary in this country has been a woman but there is no reason why it shouldn’t also be a career for men.

‘It’s quite common in other countries, especially in the United States,’ said Mr Murphy.

He added that secretarial work was no longer simply a matter of learning shorthand and typing. Advances in new technology in particular had opened up the possibilities of secretaries progressing to other jobs.
