Beautiful day for football

-

AFTER a couple of postponements and unfavourable weather conditions; the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol 2018 Girls Wicklow Times Shield finally took place in Bray Emmets GAA Grounds on Wednesday, March 21.

The weather held out for us and it made for a beautiful day for Gaelic Football.

Eleven schools took part in the day’s games, fourteen teams in total. The schools were placed into three groups.

The teams that took part were: St. Kevin’s Greystones (2 teams), Ashford N.S. (2 teams), St. Fergal’s Bray (2 teams), St. Brigid’s Greystones, St. Laurence’s Greystones, Kilcoole N.S., Newtown N.S., St. Peter’s N.S. Bray, Wicklow Educate Together, Gaelscoil Chill Mhantáin, Gaelscoil Uí Cheadaigh.

All three groups were very competitive with great skill on display in all groups. It was very hard to separate schools on many occasions.

Winners from the three groups are as follows:

GROUP ONE: St. Laurence’s GROUP TWO: Gaelscoil Chill Mhantáin

GROUP THREE: St. Fergal’s Bra y

Many thanks again to Bray Emmets for accommodating the schools. A special thank you to the teachers on getting their teams out at short notice.

INTO Skills Challenge

The annual Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Wicklow Skills competition will take place in regional venues on the week beginning April 9th.

Please take particular notice of the age restriction regarding this event. Note that the age limit has changed and is now the same for all schools regardless of enrolment numbers. Participants must be born on or after January 1st, 2006.

If a child has represented Wicklow in Croke Park previously in any code they cannot take part at any level of the skills test again e.g. regional skills day, etc.

Each school is permitted to send 2 representatives per code to compete in:

· Gaelic Football (boys)

· Gaelic Football (girls) · Hurling

· Camogie

Each pupil will only be permitted to compete in one code.

The top 4 pupils in each code from each area will be invited to compete in the County Skill Tests scheduled for the week beginning April 16th in Wicklow GAA Centre of Excellence, Ballinakill.

The top performing pupils in the County Skills tests will have the opportunity to represent their school and county during the half time of selected All Ireland Series games during the summer.

Each school has been emailed the skills tests and enrolment form, which should be brought along on the day.

It is encouraged that each school host their own internal tests to aid selection of their representatives before forwarding them to the regional skill tests.

The North East Skill Tests are scheduled for Wednesday 11th April at 11.45am in Bray Emmets.

The West Wicklow Skills Tests are scheduled for Thursday 12th April at 11am in Baltinglass GAA Grounds.

We are awaiting confirmation of the South Skill Test date and venue and will forward on the information as soon as possible.

Please ensure the pupils taking part are present at the correct time. Best of luck to all the participants.
