KWWIBA BOWLS

Dismal Display Sees Kill CBC Drop Into Danger Zone: This Round 13 Division 1 bowling league match was a game of high significance to both Ardclough and Kill Community Bowling Club for completely different reasons.

Ardclough needed the points to continue to hang onto second position while Kill CBC were badly in need of the points to stop further slippage into the danger zone.

All the odds favoured the Ardclough side having the advantage of the home venue in the fine and spacious facilities of the Ardclough GAA club. The home side have been in general, pretty much consistent throughout this league campaign, taking points in all their games to date with the exception of two away games where they failed to accrue any points.

The fortunes of Kill CBC are in stark contrast compared to their opponents at present, as they have never reached the heights of former years. Having lost a couple of top players in recent times certainly hasn’t helped their cause. Nevertheless they still have quality players at their disposal and one would expect them to be doing much better.

On both mats in this contest they were well and truly beaten by Ardclough, and they never at any stage troubled a rampant Ardclough team try as they might.

At this stage of the league the home side will be happy with the five points, but with only five games remaining it is very unlikely if Ardclough or the chasing pack will overtake Kildare Town who are the clear leaders and are not likely to make any mistakes on the run in.

This dismal display by Kill CBC sees them fourth from the bottom of the table and any more poor results will send them tumbling into the danger zone of relegation, and with some very tough assignments to come they will need to improve considerably to avoid that scenario.

Mat 1 - Ardclough: Geraldine Maguire, Tony Maguire, Brien Cullen and Dom Maguire.

Kill CBC: Alan Farrell, Declan O’ Connell, Phyllis Burke and Donal Burke.

Mat 2 - Ardclough: Leo Tiernan, Noel Cassidy, Loreto Farrell and Ben Maguire.

Kill CBC: Martin Whelan, Eddie Burke, Zelda Walsh and Josie Garvey.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior men saw their recent good run in the league come to an end on Saturday evening when they lost 4-3 away to Yellowstone Celtic.

The lads went in front on sixteen minutes when Ciaran McGettigan netted. The home side hit back to go 2-1 up but Maurice Dunne levelled five minutes before the break with his tenth of the season. Disaster struck six minutes into the second half when the home team were awarded a penalty, which put them 3-2 in front. With eleven minutes left Yellowstone went 4-2 up to seemingly seal the game but to the lads credit they battled on and with six minutes left on the clock Ciaran McGettigan gave the lads a lifeline with his second of the game and his fifteenth of the campaign to pull it back to 4-3.

Unfortunately for the lads they just couldn’t get the equaliser despite creating numerous chances.

The result is a setback but they are still very much in the title and promotion mix.

Junior action last week started early with the 12B’s playing under lights on Thursday night when they entertained Avonmore A, the Rathdrum side ran out 2-0 winners but the lads could have snatched something from the game.

On Saturday the 12A’s continued their good run since joining the DDSL ranks. Saturday saw them defeat Wayside Celtic in the first round of the Hillary cup winning comprehensively 10-0. Lorcan Sinnott led the way with a splendid haul of four goals to make it five for the campaign. Brian McCaul nabbed his firsts of the DDSL season when he notched a brace, Charlie Czwalina also nabbed a brace to bring his tally to three. Tom Donoghue and Lee Brown scored their firsts of the campaign to round off the scoring in what was a good all round team performance.

The 12C’s went down 8-2 away to Greystones United A in the first leg of their cup quarter-final, the lads were always up against it but never gave up. Ben Doyle and Cian Doyle were on the scoreboard for Rovers.

Our 13A’s recorded an excellent 8-0 away win away to Peamount United in the first round of the Gerry Murphy cup.

Oscar Malcolmson fired home an astonishing five goals in clinical fashion, Darragh Heffernan, Jack Noble and Steven Gormley all added singles in the lads first game in weeks.

The 13B’s drew 2-2 away to Greystones, having not played since November the lads showed their rustiness when they fell 2-0 behind early on, they showed great character to battle back to earn a share of the spoils with goals from Peter Dunne and Eoin Cleary.

The 14B’s travelled to Coolboy but didn’t have any luck as they were defeated 4-1 with Alexander Gallet getting their lone goal.

Our 15A’s maintained their one hundred percent start in the DDSL with a narrow 3-2 win over Phoenix FC in an entertaining encounter. Ross Quinn, Ryan Kavanagh and Dylan Cummins all hit the back of the net to make it four wins from four games for Jerry Lewins men.

An understrength 15B’s lost 3-0 away to Arklow Celtic in the second leg of their interim final to lose 5-3 on aggregate. The lads gave it their all on the day but just couldn’t breach a strong Arklow rearguard.

On Sunday the 14A’s went down to a disappointing 7-3 defeat at home to Arklow Celtic in the first leg of their cup quarter-final. Jordan Younger, Harry Broxson and Tomas Kennedy netted for Rovers on the day. A big thanks to under 13 players Adam Byrne, Tom Faral- ley and Charlie Phelan who helped the lads out on the day. Another team who were understrength at the weekend were the under 16’s who were short of seven regulars as they went down to a 5-0 defeat away to Coolboy Rangers.

The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday, 3rd April to Friday, 6th April at Whitegates. The camp will run from 10am to 2pm daily and is open to kids from 3 years old to 13 years old.

All our teams were in action last weekend apart from the Under 14’s, whose game was off due to school trips. Of the teams that played the Under 8’s hosted Rathnew Green in a keenly-contested series of games where among the players who starred for Newtown were Gerry Hoban and Colin Healy.

The Under 9’s were edged out narrowly in a high scoring game by Enniskerry as among their goalscorers were Leon O’Connor, JV Kelly, Leighton Byrne and Lucas Dowdall.

The 10’s travelled to take on Glencormac United and ran out winners against a gallant home side.

Among the goals were William Valentine, Max Roche, Daniel Eager and Ryan Collins while starring were Mikey Synnott and Nikita Neaga.

The 11’s enjoyed their trip to take on Arklow Town Red where Jake Robertson, William Valentine, Aidan Heffernan and Cathal O’Toole found the net. PJ Duffy and Cillian Coffey had excellent games.

The 12’s are happy campers this week after an excellent 4-0 away win against Ashford Rovers in the first leg quarter-final tie.

Patrick Martin with two and one each from Aaron Cawley abd Paudie Gammell did the damage while Iggy Szpilka, Hannah Martin and Max Synnott had excellent games.

Obviously some of the players had a win bonus inserted in their contracts according to the amount of them that were in Burger King after the game.

The team wishes the best of luck to Keira Farrelly who picked up a knock during the game.

AVONMORE FC

Avonmore U-16 v. Arklow United U-16: Our U16’s finally had their first game of the new season today at home to Arklow United in the Cup. With both teams short a number of players we both managed to just about get 11 out.

Arklow started the game the strongest and were unlucky not to have scored inside the first 10 minutes. After great work by Kelan Busher the ball broke to Cody Reid who lobbed the keeper from 15 yards to put us one up after 11 minutes.

We were getting on top at this stage and in 16 minutes we were awarded a penalty after Kelan had been fouled he stepped up and scored. Arklow were unfortunately down to 8 men before we scored our third goal this came from Luke Kearney after a scramble in the box from our corner kick. We went in leading 3-0 at half time.

In the 47th minute Andrew Brancato scored from the edge of the box to make it 4-0 and that’s the way it finished. Fair play to Arklow United who fought all the way with limited numbers and were very unlucky not to have scored a few goals only for our keeper Conor Nolan making some excellent saves. Well done to all. We hope to see all at training Thursday night

Avonmore U-12A v. Wicklow Rovers U-12: A great win for our U-12A team against Wicklow Rovers in the first round of the cup. Conditions were poor with driving rain, but this didn’t deter our lads.

We knew Rovers would come at us strong, after losing twice to us and they didn’t disappoint. With some great football from both sides, we were first to put one away, when Leighton Doran shimmied past his player and scored. Continuing the pressure, Kian Fluskey found room and also stuck one away.

The second half was more of the same, but for the brave goalkeeping of the Rovers keeper we could have been a few more goals up. The work rate of the team was immense, Paddy Harper, Oscar Dowling and Mark O’Reilly deserving a mention. A brilliant performance tonight lads in very poor conditions, well done.
